Ever see this bumpersticker on a Ford, GMC, or Chevy?  You know, the "American-Made" cars that are usually put together with parts manufactured in China, assembled in China, and shipped here and sold to us as "American-Made"?  This sticker makes me want to SCREAM!!!!  Joe and I drive a Scion, a Toyota company who's headquarters and manufacturing are here in the US.
What irks me the most about those stickers is that they're usually on vehicles that are built in China or Mexico.  I mean, are we supposed to be rewarding the companies that sent US jobs somewhere else?  Sorry, not going to happen.  I refuse to buy GM, Ford, or Chevrolet until their manufacturing jobs are back in US hands.
On top of that, it's THESE people who are buying all products manufactured in China, bought by the lowest bidder, and sold at low-low prices.  In reality, the builders in China are barely scraping by on their meager salary so WalMart can afford to sell you your cheap Barbie™ dolls and video game systems, and the cashier behind the counter is on welfare because her job doesn't pay her enough to raise her 5 kids .. her husband got laid off from his manufacturing job because his plant got moved to China.

Are we seeing a cycle?  Michigan isn't a hell-hole because we're lazy and don't want to work.  Our jobs are being ripped away, and it's not just the automotive industry.  Anyone remember Tecumseh Products?  They used to be a leading manufacturer of Cardboard and paper products.  Who are the industry leaders now?  Chinese manufacturers who can, and will, produce for much less.

I know.  This sounds sooooooooooooooo xenophobic of me.  But, you know, I would rather know that what I'm buying isn't, by association, putting my neighbor on the street.  Isn't helping to make sure they can't pay their mortgage so they get foreclosed on.  Isn't keeping their children from going hungry until school starts again when they can get free breakfast and lunch.

This is a real problem, and people are just blinding themselves to it.  We all fall for it, we buy the latest Wii game, and sit and do nothing, and eat more mac and cheese, and forget about everything, because what's happening to Tom and Jane Neighbor doesn't affect me, right?

I've been adamant about this for a long time.  Free trade means TRADE.  Not that the CEO's of US companies get to trade my job to another country.  Trade goods.  Trade at a GOOD competitive price.  Be honest.

But, that, right there, is something that we Americans have a hard time doing.

I don't know if this is fuel for the fire or not, But you know what erks me. Those American (I myself am guilty of this) who just sit here and let it all happen. No one I repeat NO ONE is doing anything about it. Why because everyone feel they can't. They try to look to their government, (i stress LOOK not talk) to do something about it. But our government has showed us time and time again that they do is lie to us. For instance voting they want us to help being them down. They arn't keeping this from us they are showing us what they are doing to us and letting us turn the blind eye. The electoral college. Its a bunch of selective individuals who's vote counts and they don't have to go with yours (the popular vote) They tell you about this all the time on the news. But Then at the same time they go and tell everyone to vote, WHY? because its a tool of empowerment. You feel like you have a hand in your government if you cast the vote. They want as many people to feel like they are doing their best with their government and that its all fair. Huff sorry to vent on your blog but i feel its all connected. Personal greed and manipulating the masses.

I'm with Jeni but its a looong road back! They've actually got so many laws now that state that something that is assembled in America with parts made outside the country can be advertised as "made in the USA!"

And the whole NAFTA, CAFTA and the like, is a two edged sword. Americans have to start looking at where things are made first and looking at the price second! And let's face it, most of these places like Walmart, are making the billions that they are on the strength of importing cheap goods that are scooped up by Americans who then crow to everyone who will listen about how cheap they were able to find their X, Y and Z.

The problem is, Walmart sells those things that everyone THINKS they need. No, no no. One can completely do without walmart. I'm looking, in my life of needs, and the only thing that Joe or I need from any big-name store is Wranglers (He wears them for work). And I can buy them online, directly from the manufacturer, for less than I can get them at Walmart. Granted, I have to pay shipping, but the mailman is a union employee, therefore I know he/she has benefits and a decent wage.
My goal is to buy the things I need at smaller, family-owned businesses or from people I know. I would rather spend more money getting my meat and vegetables from small shops at the Eastern Market here in Detroit than going to WalMart, Kroger, or Meijer (our conglomerate of superstores), and I KNOW that it's all fresh, I'm going to get a great deal, and it's actually quality. The fruit isn't covered with wax, the meat isn't injected with preservatives, and the look of disdain I get from the butcher is because I'm pretending that I know what the hell I'm talking about, not because he hasn't had a break in 6 hours ;)
But, I can't really take credit for the idea...my friend, James, put it in my head, and I hope to make it stick.
