ABSENTEE – Kruger Singles Club release

London 5 piece Absentee make beautiful indie rock with a Southern twang – think Dinosaur Jr. meets Neil Young! Their appearance at BE celebrates an exclusive download-only single release, 'They Do It These Days'' with Kruger Magazine on 4/08/08. The band have gained a great position in the pop world over the last few years by supporting the likes of The Go! Team and Architecture in Helsinki. The NME says "Absentee's very existence makes the world a better place". Recorded with producer Nick Terry (Libertines, Bernard Butler, Klaxons), their third album 'Victory Shorts' is due for release in August 2008, and will see Absentee providing the soundtrack for every lost soul who took a wrong turn whilst looking for the right one.

WE HAVE BAND

We Have Band are on a straightforward mission: to make people dance. Last London stop before a couple of months away from the capital, the Be dancefloor had better be drained of all its energies once they leave the stage, or the mission won't be completed. Sassy basslines and obsessive rhythms make their infectious dark dance music, "part Hot Chip, part Talking Heads, if Fisherspooner topped Emerge it would sound like this" according to The Guardian. Back in 2007, they were thrown together by impending redundancy and a mutual love of Chilean red wine (you get more for your money), so let's all thank the credit crunch for having given birth to We Have Band.

DJ

TRONIK YOUTH

Tronik Youth is the uber producer responsible for some of the finest dancefloor remixes that have ever graced your clubbed out ears. He has reworked the Gossip, The Rakes, Franz and Shape, New Young Pony Club and most recently MGMT, to name a few, and we're sure the portfolio is only going to get even better. A massive DJ who's playing everywhere from Hollywood to Paris via Tjuana. And Be.

GROVESNOR

Rob Smoughton once played drums for Hot Chip and met Alexis Taylor when they worked together in a record shop. When he chooses to write sumptuous electronica-tinged love songs he goes by the name of Grovesnor. On 21st July 2007 the planets were clearly in alignment. Well in London anyway… A little known Grovesnor supported Hot Chip at Somerset House. He had released his debut 7" 'Nitemoves' earlier that month – a single that opened Hot Chip's DJ-Kicks compilation and whose mixture of Teddy Pendergrass soul and Aphex Twin programming garnered rave reviews, making FACT's top 100 tunes of 2007 and Mylo's "soundtrack of the summer" in the Observer. Released this year on Greco-Roman, Grovesnor's next single 'Drive Your Car' is an unabashed 80s lovesong revolving around a Miami chauffeur's voyeuristic obsession with his beautiful lady client. Coming along like the theme tune to Moonlighting fed through a French disco filter, this irresistibly catchy retro floorfiller will have you hooked, as will the rest of Grovesnor's set…

THE OSCILLATION

The Oscillation has risen out of the ashes of the critically acclaimed Orichalc Phase (two 12" only releases for DC Recordings in 2006), and is the brainchild of Demian Castellanos, a musician and producer based in East London with a penchant for stargazing sonics and attention grabbing melodies. Drawing on a rich variety of influences and articulating ideas with an array of instruments that range from home made zithers to singing bowls and Moog synthesisers, the music of The Oscillation shows an artist who is as comfortable making pop songs as expansive psychedelic freakouts. From krautrock edginess to noise driven fuzz, this is the kosmische musik of Neu! and Tangerine Dream interpreted with an eye on Pil's dubbed out punk funk. The Oscillation also remixed Simian Mobile Disco's "Tits and Acid", which is coming out at the end of July 2008 on their remix album "Sample And Hold".

HOT BUT NOT hearts BOSTON CRAB (Greco Roman Soundsystem)

With AnnaWrecksIt away this Month, Hot But Not's Captain Magic teams up with the wonderful Boston Crab from Greco Roman. Hot But Not have quickly taken over the East and North London party scene with their infectious party behavior of wigs, costumes, facepaint and FUN! Collective Greco Roman (who include Joe Hot Chip and other cool dudes in their ranks) host a series of sporadic, chaotic parties organised at the last minute in random venues, in random cities, with random types of music. Taking inspiration from the homo-erotic olympic sport favoured by Eastern Europeans and frat boys, they don leotards and fight it out for supremacy.....So Let's Fight!

HATCHAM SOCIAL

Hatcham Social formed in South London in early 2006 when siblings Toby Kidd (guitar / vocals) and Finn Kidd (drums) met up with bassist David Fineberg, who shared their mutual love of The Beach Boys, Josef K and Orange Juice. Over the last two years, their debut single 'How Soon Was Then' and the follow up 'Dance As If'' together with live dates around the country have seen them emerge as one of the most exciting new bands around. Currently in the studio, Hatcham Social are working on the follow up to their recent single 'So So Happy Making' on Loog Records and are getting ready to set off on a batch of UK & European live dates over the Summer, including shows with the The Charlatans, XX Teens, Lord Auch, festival appearances in Barcelona and at Standon Calling, and a headline at Be !

ELECTRICITY IN OUR HOMES

Floated on the stock market in summer 2007, Electricity In Our Homes have already proved to their shareholders that they are at the forefront of London's upcoming surge of original and creative bands. With their art-house tendencies, a minimal sound and short sharp shows, they are a fine quartet in the tradition of some of the most interesting no-wave and post-punk acts, such as: Lizzy Mercier, Mars, DNA, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Josef K, The Fire Engines. The Independent said : 'A musical aesthetic kinda reminiscent of early Adam and the Ants/ P.I.L. I heard they put tin foil covers on the microphones'. With support slots for The Horrors, Blurt and The Charlatans under their belt and two singles that sold out within days, EIOH are looking at 2008 with wide eyes and open arms. And we're happy to be a part of their journey !

DJ

ZOMBIE DISCO SQUAD

With Get Rude, their monthly East End party, and other nights they got involved in, Zombie Disco Squad are representing booty bass for the hipper London clubbers. The ZDS boys, Nat (who is unfortunately on his own tonight) and Lucas, have been a duo since 2005, playing house-tempo music, mixed with baile funk, Baltimore club music, emphasising heavy basslines and grooves with a lot of bouce. They like Claude Vonstroke and Frankie Knuckles, Berlin and London, Brie and Stilton, but hate new rave and men's cycling shorts. Fair enough!

SO SO MODERN

Artrocker recently wrote of So So Modern : "easily the most explosive and captivating band of the evening - the post modernists blow the venue to pieces". Now we're eager to see how the Horse Hospital will get on! Constantly seeking authentic musical experiences through performance they believe more than ever in the importance of song-craftsmanship, and the power of musical delivery in performance. They characteristically employ use of asymmetrical structures, close attention to rhythm, chants and song experimentation to make their own brand of emergent noise pop. This resides somewhere between their hardcore punk background, New York no-wave bohemia, kraut-rock and escapades in electronics.

VELOFAX

Openers Velofax originate from all over the world (or rather Jersey, France and London), and pride themselves of being musical alchemists who can fuse elements of experimental kraut-rocking disco grooves with prog technicality. Many have fallen for their sonic gymnastics, including Radio 1's Steve Lamacq, Xfm's John Kennedy, BBC 6 Music and London record store Rough Trade. They have gigged at the city's best venues (including Bush Hall, The Luminaire, The Barfly), and since their last appearance at BE have signed a record deal for their latest self-titled album. Their energetic live shows and growing reputation have led to support slots with New Young Pony Club and Datarock. "The kind of music you can't not dance to" says Gigwise. We can't wait to give it a try!

DJ

RORY PHILLIPS

Rory Phillips was main resident at Trash throughout its legendary existence, which bowed out at the end of 2006 after ten amazing years, and has continued to fly the monday night flag at DURR since January '07, as well as at the infamous ...And Did We Mention Our Disco? parties. Rory also keeps a studio in his spooky lock up in Hackney, where he has remixed Chromeo, The Gossip, The Teenagers, and Robyn's 'With Every Heartbeat'. He also plays keyboards for the mercurial Whitey, with whom he has recently toured the US and Canada. So having DJ'd all over the world alongside dance music's biggest names, we are happy to welcome Rory's leftfield disco mayhem back to the decks at BE!

THE XX

Understated, minimalist and hauntingly soulful, this South London quartet are purveyors of distilled laid-back new wave pop. Think Massive Attack cuddling up to Coco Rosie, Aaliyah to The Cure, with boy-girl vocal interplay, simple instrumentals and sampled beats played in real time, melded together to create space. Or as the Guardian puts it: "Bafflingly ace moody hip-pop with bass so thick you could cut it with a carving knife."

MILKE

Milke are inspired by 80's bands, 90's raves and 2000's production. Amongst other things, they've remixed Justice vs Simian's rather large track "We Are Your Friends" and have already played London venues like 333, 93 Feet East, Cargo, Bar Music Hall, went to Berlin at the infamous Club 103, and as far a field as Yekinterinburg in Russia. Their cover of "Your Love" by Frankie Knuckles was released in March this year to great reviews by great DJs (Trailer Trash, Ed Banger's Vicarious Bliss, Club NME etc.), and their friends Joe and Will Ask have done an amazing remix of it. Look out for their next single "proper", "Just Say Yes'!

DJ

NIGHTMOVES

Both resident djs at the apotheosis of the Nottingham scene, Liars Club, Matt & Pete aka Nightmoves one day decided to produce their own music. Their first opportunity arose after "Disco Simon," a regular drunkard at Liars Club, who was often found on the pavement sans shoes the day after the night before, formed a band whom Nightmoves would later remix. The band, Klaxons, it would transpire, would make quite an indent on the music scene and Nightmoves' remix of their first single, Gravity's Rainbow was included on Kitsune's release of the track. Managed by the same team as Digitalism, Nightmoves – now stripped down to Matt alone – has to date rejigged the likes of Shitdisco, Freeform Five, Punks Jump Up, Friendly Fires, Late of the Pier, Roisin Murphy or Robbie Williams, and has been endorsed by Erol Alkan, Paul Epworth, Filthy Dukes, Simian Mobile Disco, MSTRKRFT, Mark Moore… He's also found time to disseminate his mad sounds throughout the UK, including in London places such as Fabric, The End, 333 or the Bugged Out! night.
