Today was our first Snow Day of the 2006-07 school year. They called it last night in time for the 10:00 news.
The sad thing is that the weather forecasters screwed up. I awoke this morning to find the ground clear of snow. Around 9:30 this morning a flock of snowflakes fluttered by, but they didn't stick around. I stayed at home and finished a book, Never Let Me Go. My son, Owen, must have gone through about six scenarios of Zoo Tycoon 2 over the course of the day.
The fact is: I hate snow days. I have ever since I was in 1st grade. I grew up in Ohio, where snow came every winter and stuck around for weeks at a time. The only time we got out of school was the first day of a really bad blizzard. After that, the roads were clear, even though there was a foot of snow on the ground, so we went to school.
I really, really liked school. I remember once, in 2nd grade, my teacher called to tell me that school was closed. I broke into tears and threw a temper tantrum. Of course, then I went outside and sledded down the hill outside my house for the next six hours. That's what a snow day is for!!!
Snow days in Tennessee are lousy. Even when it does snow, the snow usually melts before 2:00 the next afternoon. Today was a snow day with no snow.
I'll throw another temper tantrum any minute...just wait, it's coming.
