BLANK DOGS – Waiting (In The Red)
-Blank Dogs are one of my favorites right now. The Waiting single came out when the latest album Under And Under came out. “Waiting” is one of their best songs. I’m a little surprised it wasn’t on the album, but I guess that’s what makes them a good singles band.
BLANK DOGS – Two Months (Florida’s Dying)
-This is an early Blank Dogs single that I managed to get a copy of at their show at the Summit back in January. “Two Months” is another great song. It sounded incredible live. I’d love to hear a full band recording.
SEX VID – Tania (DOM US)
-Tania is the second single from the mysterious Sex Vid. This is a classic 4 song hardcore EP with their ode to Patty Hearst, “Tania”, being the highlight. Fans of Black Flag, Cult Ritual or Fucked Up need to check out Sex Vid. I think Sex Vid might be my favorite hardcore band around right now.
SPIRIT PHOTOGRAPHY – Time Is Racing (Sacred Bones)
-I will buy anything Sacred Bones releases. I think they are one of the highest quality labels around. I was pretty stoked for this Spirit Photography single when I heard they sounded like Death In June. They don’t really, but fans of darker bands like Death In June or Sol Invictus may want to hunt this one down.
FEELERS – Nothing Always (Bachelor)
-This single is some weird European release. The a-side, “Nothing Always” is incredible. “Creeps” and “Zombies (parts 2&3)” are solid tunes as well. This is the Feelers at their best. This single boasts the best recording quality I’ve heard from these guys as well. Fans of Jay Reatard and garage punk at large need to hunt this one down. Thanks to Aleks for hooking me up with a copy. Get back together dudes!!!
NICE FACE – Exterminator (Hozac)
-I go back and forth on this band which I think is actually just one dude. The art work is pretty terrible on both the limited and standard versions, but the a-side “Exterminator” is easily the best thing Nice Face has done. Great catchy punk rock.
PILLOW TALK – Downtown Unga Wunga (Columbus Discount)
-This may be the most ridiculous record Columbus Discount has unleashed on the world. Pillow Talk features members of Deathly Fighter and Weed Steeler doing some kind of deranged synth punk. Flipper meets Suicide? Probably not, but still worth your $$$.
CHARLES ALBRIGHT – I’m On Drugs (S-S)
-I don’t know a lot about this single, other than Charles pressed and released it himself, then the good folks at S-S records reissued it. “I’m On Drugs” is a noise rock classic. Fans of the great Amphetamine Reptile label will want to check this out.
MAYFAIR SET – Already Warm (Captured Tracks)
-Mayfair Set is one half Blank Dogs and one half Dum Dum Girls and sounds like those two bands smashed together should. Watery, dark, indie-pop. C86 fans take note!
ZOLA JESUS – Soeur Sewer (Sacred Bones)
-Zola Jesus is tough to describe. Think a lo-fi Kate Bush. Soeur Sewer was her second single and came out on the venerable Sacred Bones label. When I first heard this, I didn’t know what to make of it, but after a few listens, everything clicked. Fans of experimental pop music need to check this out. Her new cd “The Spoils” compiles this 7”, the first 7”, and the new album “The Spoils”.
