Well...it's certainly been an interesting few days... It all started innocently enough. Stayed in on Friday night, studied my Native Instruments and finally watched 'City of God,' which is an absolutely fantastic film. For those of you who saw the film in the theater, you may want to consider renting the DVD because it comes with a documentary(name escapes me now, but that's hardly surprising at this point) which delves deeper into the issues covered in the movie from the perspectives of the drug dealers, the residents of the "City of God" favela and the police. It's almost inconceivable what's going on in Rio. Saturday I made a stop by 1015 Folsom to pick up some money. I then went over to the Le Boom underground party at the "sweatbox," also known as 199 Capp St., also known as "a total fucking deathtrap waiting to happen." Actually I think I'm the only who one calls it that. The lineup was Tasho, Antonio, M3 the latin lova, Brett Johnson from Dallas and Jeno, who played an upfront, tuff house set I was very impressed with. Somehow I ended up drinking a fruit drink with vodka in it. I realize many of you are saying, "no way" right now. You'll get over it. The party was full, but it wasnt insanely crowded which is nice, considering the venue. Somehow I ended up in that damn smoking room on a couch for a long period of time, chilling with various people, including a young lady from Russia named Natasha. Been here in the states for like, 11 years and still has a thick-ass accent. I felt like James Bond trying to uncover state secrets! At one point she was like, "how come whenever I am at party--and there is the one black guy he is the one who talks to me?" I honestly had no answer for her. Suddenly it was 6am(red dawn?), the party was over. You spend a few hours getting to know someone in an incredibly smoke-filled room and of course it's natural to maybe exchange information before breaking outta there. It was at this point she decided to inform me that she was married. Her husband was in London. I dont know if he lives there or was just there visiting. Then she was like, "give me your number." That normally means, "I'm not going to call," but shockingly she rang me up the next day(sunday), wanting to hang out. That night. I told her I would call her back to make plans, which by the way ladies, if a guy says that to you, you should know there may be a problem. So, although I truly have no interest in being this chick's little something on the side, just to be sure, I asked a few people for their opinions before I had to ring her. Interestingly, the responses were divided along gender lines. Women I asked were totally against it. A lot of the argument focused on the concept of Karma, which I understood wholeheartedly. Guys I asked were like, "well, if she just wants to hit it and quit it...." take care of your business. I didnt call her back, nor will I. What would you do? So, after the Le Boom party I went to The End Up to see Cat and Jeniluv play. That was a lot of fun, but as always, being in that place on a Sunday is fucking weird. I was talking to this guy who used to bartend at Anu, and this chick he knew, we'll call her D. Hanging out a few feet from us were two dudes and four "girls." The two dudes looked to be in their mid/late twenties, wearing button down shirts and pleated pants. Somehow, we start discussing them. They seemed pretty wasted, the girls were all over them. Then, D says "I wonder if they know that those are men they're with." Before either me or bartender guy could respond, she says, "I'm going to tell them they are with men," and walks over to the group to deliver her very important message. The guy got a very puzzled look on his face and looked to be saying, "what are you talking about?" Another tranny then tells D to mind her business, and kind of chews her out right there on the spot. She walks back over to us and it's just too weird for words so we end up walking out to the patio. Very strange situation, even for T-Dance. Later that day, I ended up at a bday party in Potrero Hill which was definitely the highlight of the weekend. House party style, rambunctious but not out of control, with an acid house soundtrack for the entire time. Niceness! Chatted with two really cool hair stylist/rocker chicks. One of them mentioned that "techno boys are cooler than rocker boys because rocker boys are boring and aloof. And techno boys throw better parties!" She got that right. From there we all went to Pink for Bionic. It was packed, and I ran into some people I havent seen a long time and met some very nice new people as well. Then yesterday I watched a few more movies, including a "Bowling for Columbine." I watched the Charlton Heston segment twice. It was unbelieveable. No music today, will post more soon!

Funny that you mention the Sweatbox as a deathtrap, 'cause *just this morning* I got a voicemail from a friend, who said that she hates 199 Capp and went on to list the reasons why. In addition to the Sweatbox being all the obvious things (hot, sweaty, dirty), that it is actually pretty dangerous 'cause of the fact that the only way in and out is through the door upstairs. Until she said that I guess I hadn't really considered its safety, but you're both absolutely right. Will this very real fact stop me from partying there? Probably not. We throw ourselves in harm's way all the time, but it is good to be conscious of when and where we're doing it.
