"It is of course a big irony that UK thrash band Sworn Amongst have risen to fame on the back of a Kerrang/Snickers unsigned competition. After all, one sponsor rots your teeth (and used to be called Marathon) and the other one rots your brain (and used to be called Sounds). But still, their first album is just fucking marvellous! So let us prostrate ourselves before it in awe.
To begin with, this self-titled album has some truly exellent melodies that shred away with an utter savagery that was once thought dead by the early 90s. Of course, what really did for thrash was the overly convoluted and dragged out solo, but SA deftly dodge this with a disciplined structure. And it’s all tied together with a skilful performance from the band, all delivered with not a small amount of flair.
The only real complaint is that a certain cardinal rule of good thrash gets ignored just a bit too much. That is, thrash metal songs should be short and to the point, whereas, most of the tracks on the album go over five minutes in length and outstay their welcome. This is only a minor complaint and the thrash intensity does tend to keep the listener keen and alert in order for him/herself to appreciate the met-aaaal more.
Yet this misses the overall point: as said, this is a thing of beauty, fury and speed, and that’s all that ultimately matters.
