Neon is a legendary new wave band formed in Florence 1979 and led by Marcello Michelotti. Marcello is the only permanent member of Neon and therefore the different musicians who contributed in this act saw to it that also the sound varied which each setting. This without loosing their roots. Although a lot of people might not know Neon, this cult act from Italy was quite big in their home-country. In 1980 the band got off to an electronic start with the single Information of Death. Later, through several line up changes, it achieved to create a mix of obsessive electro sounds, obscure atmospheres and quite original pop melodies which took shape in later works like Tapes of Darkness (1981), Obsession (1981), My Blues in You (1983), Dark Age (1984 which you might know from a Zwichenfall sampler). In 1985 the album Rituals sanctioned Neon as the best Italian new wave band of that year. And listening to this best of album I definitely know why. Listening to tracks as Isolation, Information of Death, Runnin' and Dark Age the guitar dominates over the synthesizer. Tracks such as Boxes, My Blues in You, Drivin' and Spiders for example have a more synthesizer orientated sound. In my opinion the combination of more guitar driven songs and synthesizer based songs combine very well on this album. Every song on this album sounds great and looks promising on the dance-floor of new wave and Gothic dance parties around the globe. Personal favourites are Isolation (also presented as a nice video on this album), Information of Death, Runnin' and Dark Age.
The other tracks are of the same quality so take your pick! Memories is a best of album which should not be missed by fans of the genre! An absolute recommendation for fans of the genre which makes me curious how Neon would do it on stage!
