The Word Witch

............

Why definition is important.

An interesting thing happened on Youtube. My video on the word Witch caused all sorts of controversy and some Christians saw it as a way to create a wedge between what I was saying and the Pagans’ view or the Gardenarians’, while others perceived it as an attack on their Wiccan ways. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is for this very reason that I go out of my way in the first class of the Cabot tradition to explain what we are and where we come from.

Let us put the etymology of the word aside as even the experts cannot agree fully on the word Witch, or Wicca, Wicce, much less Wiccan and it really no longer matters very much anyway. Some people credit Dr. Gardner for term Wican, but the foundations of what he practiced is a form of Witchcraft to which he added naturism.

To have a meaningful exchange however we should agree to a couple of things. One, that the term Witchcraft is not an umbrella term that covers all those people that do Magick. Secondly Witchcraft has its roots in the Indo European migration of people who became known as the Celts and Anglo Saxons. It may have much older roots than that starting in Egypt and beyond, but to be a Witch, no matter the specific tradition, means you recognize the roots as coming from there in some way. The Shamanistic traditions, Pagans, Neo Pagans, the Voudons all have their own name, we have many things in common, but they are not Witches nor would they want to be.

Scientology is a new religion, until L Ron Hubbard came along there was no such thing. While some may argue that there are a lot of echoes from many philosophies, the core of that federally recognized religion and how they practice it, is historically new. If you speak to Wiccans however it does not take long to realize that much of what they believe has ancient roots. Mind you there is a new generation of people who call themselves Wiccan and are also Vampires, Satanists and all sorts of other things. Let us leave them out of this for now.

Many Wiccans point to the 13 principles of Wiccan belief as their definition of Wicca as a religion. These 13 principles were written and debated over in 1974 and the process, with the resulting document, was a historic, bold and courageous step to try and define for all, the general spiritual truths that many of us share in varying degrees, but it was never intended to be the basis of a new religion or a substitute for the fundamental teachings of all the groups that came forth to write, in committee, the 13 principles. It was as someone on a blog put it, a “position paper” and it was meant to ease the pressure on Witches in North America and because of the broad language, it could easily cover many other groups as well. Each group represented got their bit of language in there and had to compromise on others. The council could not be kept together long because of the many differences inherent between them.

I was there and I lived those times, and let me caution you, those times are not over. Prejudice against ALL non Christians is still here and specifically Witches and you can see it the workplace, in communities and even in the courts where you can lose your children in custody battles for being a Witch. Remember Reverend White and all the others who used the elections as a way to get their messages of hate out there? Witches, Buddhists, Hindus,Satanists and even the Jews were all thrown together. Yoga was attacked and taken out of school activities because it corrupted minds indoctrinating children into Hinduism.

So “Wiccans” are under fire make no mistake. To be fair, pressure on all non Muslims is also present in other parts of the world with deadly consequences. Those not of either faith are essentially being squeezed on both sides by long standing enemies who have been warring with each other for centuries. Hindus and Buddhists have greater numbers than we do which gives them some advantage. We must remember that we are older than both Christianity and Islam and there has never been a Witch war, though we do seem to bicker an awful lot.

So to be a Wiccan is now a legally accepted term. Army Chaplains who are to render aid and comfort on the field of battle were issued the 13 principles for fallen troops and used for Witches and Pagans alike. It was a significant step forward, but it still does not define what one believes or provides for an easy path to follow. When Martin Luther broke from the Catholic church he felt he had good reason, he was hunted down and almost killed, and he went back to his core beliefs which were clearly defined in liturgy and practice.

The Wiccan umbrella is so large, it is akin to saying one is from the Americas or from the continent of Asia. There are so many countries there, it is hard to know to whom you are speaking. I personally find the etymology of words interesting and welcome any opportunity to be educated, but the meaning associated with a word is as much a product of history as it is of the cultural frame in which it is used. Witches are now Wiccans, but I will resist the “Wicca as a religion” banner since I see the religion and practices of many Wiccans as coming from Witchcraft which is an ancient and fully working system and needs no new name. Some Wiccans I speak with, seem drawn to the Pagans more than to Witchraft and I would urge them to delve into those practices fully and call them by their rightful and traditional names, which they all have. There are also the Eclectics which find their path from the many, which is fine as long as it works for them but even they, will be looking for the roots of things.

To those that thought I was attacking Wicca, I am not. I am a firm believer however in fundamentals and Wicca is too broad a term for me to use in actual application. The Cabot Tradition teaches the fundamentals and organizes them into a working system that is not based on belief but on experience. I did not invent a religion here, the things I teach are not mine, they are ancient, the small contribution I have made is to develop a teaching mechanism that gives students a way to learn that is compatible with these busy times while focusing on the core which is Science, philosophy, art and lastly religion. I place religion last because I have grown to dislike what that word means to so many. I see it used as a weapon more often than not, which is very unfortunate.

Thank you for this.-I do not happen to be Wiccan. I am not religious. But my grandmother was Welsh and my great grandmother was Irish form the Old Castle Hackett clan and the both taught me the ways to be a green herbal healer. I do not care the origins, etc..but  to me, it's just my life and the wat I live. I am solitary..which seems wise, as it keeps me out of the "politics" of things, and just allows me to enjoy my own family craft. I don't give it a real name. If I can help, or teach my descendents to, it does not need a label.
Thank you for the wisdom. We have too many weapons. There is more a need for healing.
Now..if there's anything that can be done about the over-usage of the words "witch hunt" on CNN or other news channels?..THAT would be SO nice and less offensive, don't you think? (One of the few things I do  not like.)

Thank You, I really enjoyed reading this and I must agree that the word witch can be so easily misunderstood. Some hear it and think evil and others have no thoughts at all. I myself understand it is just a word and the person who carries it makes it what it is. Your words of wisdom and insight are helpful to those who read them. Blessed Be!

Laurie, thank you for the wonderful article. I have been a practioner for 30 years and education is very important to me as well. I believe what ever title one choses to call them selves  if the heart is pure of thought and intent then whom is any one to say their wrong. I believe there are also so many new " religions" popping forth these days it's hard to keep track. I practice the arts of Witchcraft and teach others about this ancient and wonderful religion. It's inspiring to hear a legend such as your self talk. I don't practice " Wicca" but respect those whom do. Was Mr. Gardner a DR? I didn't know that.

Awesome blog Laurie and it was time someone spoke up for the origins.Words are powerful things and used inadequetly can really lead to confusing consequences.I sincerely loved this

Because in these times we live in,i wonder knowing in my soul, that i am called to servive as a witch, to be a bridge,i wonder how the Goddess wants me to serve, i know having a photographic memory that as science states the universe is a hologram , as a witch i was born with gifts some would call genetic, some would call spiritual gifts, i feel they are both, as an artist and psychic, and a sensitive soul i wonder and ponder my place in this world, i am but one small person with abilities i partially understand and which science and religion are are finally accepting, i feel as you, religion has left a sour taste , but there is still good, and i believe it is good that we dont agree on all things , but almost all religions have common factors, this is not to slander any faith, but i wonder if the differnt faiths and religions could meet, like they would a united nations meeting, how similar people would all see we are. I love the video you posted about one world..i would love to see another video like it, with out the graphic images...if i have images of good things i can project them for good when i see the tragedies it strikes my soul....language is such a tricky thing...and as a witch i know words have power....I am grateful you do teach religion last , but at the same time teach us to be more ethical,You are a wonderful teacher, and if a child is not challenged it will not grow,Laurie , please always, attaine to your highest ideals, and always hold dear to your heart what you know is good and right. You are such a good and kind person..a wise person once told me what one person calls majick another calls a miracle, what one person says is a psychic, another would call a prophet..May all that you hold Holy and sacred continue to guide and protect you in all you do, grant you strength when you need it, discenment when you need it rest when you need it

Very insightful Blog for those that dont understand or lack some knowledge in aspects of the Witches path, Might i add that Gardner started wicca with intent to make it for many. Wicca as a whole is simply a religion based on naturism, and unfortuantley Gardner new exactley what he was doing in creating the wicca and that it could become a generlized term involving many variations. Which is eccelctic in itself by the many forms and studies coming from ceremonial magic and then ceremonial magic taking it from primitive beliefs, as we see here it been a transition over time that only has created a struggle for lineage through the masses, but i can surley say that last thing he wanted was to be between the big three abrahamic religions and that he also did seek help when creating the wiccan religion. Witchcraft in itself is more of a practice then anything that has been going on for quite some time, to exclude the appelations and to only excite the moods of many things then only do we seek the better understanding for mysticism. I can surley go on this subject for many hours but i will stop here and say that yes wicca along with many others is a religion by far to create an theurgistic approach on life and that witchcraft of today is thaumaturgistic approach. If only could we give insight to the dedicated seekers of our ways in honest manner then things will be better off. But as long as society expects overnight success on everything we put or hands or thoughts on then there truly is no hope !!!!!

Your classes on witchcraft that i took (now i am a proud second degree cabot witch) showed me the truth about witchcraft. I honestly used to consider myself wiccan even though i knew what i practiced was indeed witchcraft because the word wiccan made me feel accepted...it was easier for me to say i was wiccan than to say i was a witch. your class showed me not to be ashamed of who i am and what i practice and i now proudly call myself a witch...and even prouder a cabot witch at that. you are an amazing teacher and your classes gave me the purpose and direction my life lacked before. and not only are you an amazing teacher, you are an amazing person and some day i hope to be able to teach others what you taught me. anyways, thank you for everything you taught me so far...i can't wait to take your witchcraft 3 class...i know its going to be full of majick :)

It is most unfortunate but at the end of the day it seems every thing comes down to ego. Every one wants to think their religion was the first or is the best. If one could open their mind and ACTUALLY STUDY history they would know that it appears Witchcraft was the first. I have been practicing for 35 years now and while I feel on a very deep personal level that Witchcraft is the best religion and I would state it as the emphatic sole truth, I suppose that is the difference between us and other religions. This is where EGO comes into play. Laurie has been very clear that she is not attempting or intending to insult anyone's religion but Ego's keep getting in the way. The Ego sees what is wants and hear's what it wants. PUT YOUR EGO ASIDE! There is a VERY DISTINCT difference between all religions including Wiccan and Witchcraft. One is not better than the other they are simply different. As a community we should embrace each other's differences and support one another instead of allowing our fragile little ego's to get in the way. Laurie is simply stating the differences not attacking any one or any Religion. People, you have to get over yourselves. If we hope not to just survive but thrive we have to keep open minds and hearts. If you are going to enter into any Religion you have to drop your Ego at the door and be willing to accept difference which Laurie Cabot has done so well for these many years. I am not hear to stroke Laurie's Ego I am stating my opinion which I feel is an educated one and I say SHAME on all of you who can't handle learning a little something out of your egotistical comfort zone!
Blessings to ALL
