Hi everyone! I am writing this blog belatedly as I've been swamped with that pesky work monster - blah! Jim Beal Jr. at the San Antonio Express News was kind enough to write about Monkeysoop in the Weekender on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009 - the night of our CD Release Party with Confusion Only and Buffalo Lopez at the Crazy Ape. Many thanks to Jim for his excellent words . . .
-- Monkeysoop's rock
San Antonio has long been a rock 'n' roll town. That's not liable to change anytime soon. But even in a place in which everything from oldies to extreme metal, from classic rock to alt-rock, is everywhere, Monkeysoop stands out. For one thing, there's that name. For another, Monkeysoop is an instrumental quartet that crafts rock songs that run the gamut from progressive to world-music-influenced. Monkeysoop can create crunching metal and then turn around and bring Celtic and Middle Eastern strains into the mix.
Friday night at the Crazy Ape, 9930 San Pedro Ave., Monkeysoop — Jerry Connor (electric guitar), Erica Missey (electric bass), Craig McIntyre (lead electric bass) and Oscar Laun (drums) — will celebrate the release of its third CD, “Nuns' Night Out” (Sonic Wave International). Support comes from Confusion Only and Buffalo Lopez.
“I kind of threw the name Monkeysoop out there and it stuck,” said bassist Missey, laughing. “We tried to change it, but it stuck. We liked the ‘soop' because our music is a mixture of things. The name was a happy accident.” “Nuns' Night Out” features 13 tracks, most penned by Connor, some with help from other band members. Fellow guitar traveler Mani Sierra helped write “Liquid Embrace.”
The songs evoke Rush, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, Mr. Bungle, Primus and other artists who mine the instrumental rock veins. With a hotshot guitarist and two bassists sharing the front line, the music could get cluttered quickly. But Monkeysoop does not traffic in wretched excess. Instead, band members put the right notes in the right spots, use dynamics and cleverness and come up with smart music that rocks, even if it sometimes sounds like it's rocking in outer space.
Monkeysoop will work El Sol Studios on Feb. 6 with Confusion Only and Balsa Racers and then head to Arizona and California.
