21. The name that I have read on the enveloppe where you have sent your cd isn’t the one with icelandic sounding that I read in your booklet… and on myspace, you say to come from Lorraine. So I ask myself if you are french or icelandic hehe !? Does nationality make the roots ? The current nationality doesn’t make the roots ! For instance, Lorraine (Lothringen) is now officially french, but like for Alsace, many of the people living here aren’t Celtes neither Romans (except for all the italians) but they are germanic… My real name isn’t Runahild, but Brenda, Brenda is a germanic name that I am proud to bear, because it comes from « brendr » which represented the warrior women, from where come the ancient name Brünnhild/Brynhildr. I do not pretend to be icelandic in particular, but nordic and germanic… my name « Runahild Bjarkanweiss Tyrsdottir » defines who I am… 22. Who were your ancestors ? isn’t it fanciful to think that we could live one day like they did ? shouldn’t we then, radically, give up everything, to give up on all the modern comfort, live solitary or in community, away for all society, to live again like them ? And even then, I am sure that even in the deep Laponi for instance, there is not one week without seeing a 4*4 on the road, a plane in the sky, and an oil tanker in water… I feel melancholy, and this stupid nostalgy by telling to myself that all of this is well ended once and for all. At least is it my opinion about this subject, what is your own ? what is your dream ? I think that the ones who have read the interview until now now know who are my ancestors !^^ Everyone has their own vision about the future… but what must be known is that the wheel is always in move and always turns, and that our world is a succesion of cycles, none is eternal, it’s a constant variation bewteen light and darkness, like the cycle of the sun, each year it grows and decline in the sky, alternating the glorious days and the dark nights… but there is always the dawn which awaits its victory… when the 3 winters that cover us will let at horizon the first light of a new day appear, then a part of this world will fade and will give birth to a new one…I do not know if I will assist to this change, however I see in the revival of the ancient beliefs this pale light that summon the coming of Sol… more and more are the ones who wish to create communities and live in harmony with nature and with their folk such as our ancestors… this is them who call to the glory of the sunwheel, by their songs and by the pagan fire in them, they brighten the darkest of night ! My dream, which is my aim, is to live in a community indeed, in self sufficiency and in autonomy, independante from the modern world… anyway, it doesn’t mean to deny all that comes from the modern world, solar pannels for instance are good to get natural energy… 23. I have lived something this week end that I never felt before. My wife and I went to walk in the garden of a monastery, and we have felt, during one hour, a true quiet and we felt really like cut from the world, and this made us thoughtful, and we have wondered…we thought that we understood those monks living far away for all and everything, and that in such a place, they had time to reflect, to think, to live their spirituality entirely… We have wondered suddenly if that wasn’t simply this to live (well, that’s true that with such a choice like theirs, we must forget about certain pleasures quite appreciated…). Have you ever lived such an experience ? Have you ever lived such a moment of isolation, and meditation ? Yes, of course, each time I am in nature… This experience you lived is interesting and lead me to a point, because in every society, every individual needs what I call a « vital space », a place where they can ressource themselves and find themselves faced to themselves only, without the constant pressure from the surrounding group… without respecting this, many situations lead to conflicts created at the heart of a group… But like everything in life, everything is a question of equilibrium, it’s needed to take some times of isolation when we feel it, but it’s not wise to be completely isolated either… And may I add that the monastery are built mainly on old sacred pagan places, where the earth and the sky energies are really mighty… 24. Is your study, your work intimately bound to your passion for history and the beliefs of your ancestors ? I currently learn the basics of the organic and biodynamic farming in the aim to one day be able to work with my land and feed my family the most possible with products coming from my own soil, healthy and 100% natural, and also in the aim to not depend of the system to live ! But as « pagan » means « farmer », then I guess I can say that yes my work is intimately bound to my ancestral beliefs ! haha 25. You are alone, maybe will you continue like this, or do you think you will one day add people to the rank, or go on stage ? You play maybe in a folk metal band, like Arkona, Hantoama, Wardruna, Astaarth or Eluveitie ? what do you think of those bands by the way ? I think I will forever be officially alone with Eliwagar, now maybe I will have some session musicians participating to the recording of future albums, who knows… and I definately wish to make concert, but for this I need musicians to join me on stage… I have already played in front of people during my formation in the farm, and I simply loved this experience !! I do not play for now with any folk metal band, I have already tried with the band Iron Woods, who are great musicians, but with distance it wasn’t very practical… I have some project in mind, but for now nothing is done, so I won’t say more on this subject… Anyway, I like a lot Arkona and Wardruna, the message they pass through their art is very noble.. Wardruna especially impresses me with their rythms and their runes invocations… it’s not music to just listen, it’s something to live and to feel ! 26. When I was a teenager, I listenned to Loreena Mckennit, John Doan and a lot more folk artists… I have all given up, because I didn’t feel anymore the call of my roots (slavonic even) during a decade. Well, do you distinguish local folk musicians, undergrounds from the other more commercial ? this is better than all the shit thrown on tv channels and radios ! Ah, if your roots are slavonic, maybe would you be interested to discover (if you don’t already know) some of the folk bands like Stary Olsa, Percival, Krynitza, Volkolak… and there is also Nordawn who make great folk metal, and also the excellent Sowilo, which is both dedicated to the germanic and slavonic paganism… I only have interest in folk artists who have a true message to pass… and generaly, they are undergrounds the ones who are the most interesting ! 27. Who are the artists, musicians, poets, writters who inspire you ? What is the artisitic basics of Eliwagar ? Writters and poets : Marie des Bois, Snorri Sturlusson, J.R.R. Tolkien Artists and musicians : Wodansson, Darken and Graveland, Varg Vikernes, Bathory, Andrea Nebel Haugen and Hagalaz’ Runedance (before she denied her roots and gave up all interest in nordic paganism… ?? to create Nebelhexe), Falkenbach, Skyforger and their album Sword Song… and many many other… 28. What do you think of the financial fall of Iceland ? How do you envisage your future at long term ? What is your opinion about the future of our country, of the occident, and of the world ? Do you see a black, white or mixed future ? Do you think that the values from the past will have a place in this chaotic universe where I think we will really need to fight to survive ? We already fight to survive… I think that it’s a good thing that this system is falling slowly, I think that many of the old values will revive actually, now that people begin to see really what is happening and how they have been manipulated… now they see in what world they really lived ! I see a good future at long-term, but of course a chaotic one at short-term, at least for all the ones who will fight to keep this system alive… Personally, I wish to just go away from this all, found my family and a village with people I estimate well and who share my values and to defend this place ! What happenned in Iceland will probably happen everywhere else in the world, because all the economical system is in crise now, it would be very simple to regulate this problem, but that’s not what the system wants ! if some are interested to inform themselves on how the monetary system manipulate us and steal us since a long time, I advice you to check the video on internet called « Money As Debt », very interesting ! What are the francophones/french bands that you admire the most, and in the contrary, that you hate ? Well, what would you recommend ? The french bands to support are Triumph, Sigvord, Savinel, Eönä mainly… and the francophone ones (so I include Quebec) : Les Bâtards du Nord, Sowilo, Fjord, Brumes d’Automne… and there are probably some I have forgotten… The ones I hate are too numberous to be quoted ! ^^ 30. Are you invested in underground _ fanzines, organisation of concert, label ? Or in other bands ? I have been invested with some organisations by the past, but the only one where I am now is the Heathen Circle. I have pariticpated to other brands : Iron Woods, Askival, Death Army and lately Rising Winter. 31. What are the cds which have marked you the most the last 6 monthes ? Bathory – Hammerheart (even if I know it since years and years…) In Acht Und Bann – Auf Runenpfaden Zwischen Den Welten Hagalaz’ Runedance – Volven Hildr Valkyrie – Shield Brothers Of Valhalla And much more .. and I wait now for the Wardruna cd, which will surely take the place number one after listening to it ! J 32. What can we await from Eliwagar in the second part of 2009, or for 2010 ? I have began to work on my third album, and maybe it will be released before end 2009… I cannot say much more, maybe will there be some concert done, but nothing is certain… 33. What have you listenned during this interview ? A lot of Wardruna and Hagalaz’ Runedance !! as well as the songs of birds outside… 34. What is to remain about Eliwagar ? What is it that you will never do with Eliwagar ? Haha, what I will never do : modern music, « untraditional » pictures without nature, deal with label who doesn’t share my values or the ideas I defend, deny paganism and my pride to become commercial, create music I don’t like personally just in the aim to release a cd… and what all that bands in general do when they begin to see some money coming in and then they prefer to sell themself and loose their spirit… What is to remain about Eliwagar : Eliwagar is true traditional pagan and nordic folk music which defend the ancestral heritage of the north and the ancient values and which honour Mother Nature !! 35. Can you give me 3 adjectives that define the personality of Eliwagar ? Like above, pagan, natural, traditional… and I add a forth : rustic ! 36. I will stop here, or this interview will make pages and pages. I must say that I find And The Ancestral Pagan Flame Shall Never Fade really good, and I listen to it in repetition without any worry ! I have spent (as well as my wife hehe) a very good time listenning to it… Well, you reconciliate me with this musical style. I thank you a lot Runahild for this interview, and I hope that from up high, your gods and your ancestors watch upon you waiting your coming !
