Current mood:  annoyed
I am an advocate of the legalization of marijuana.

There, I said it, and I meant it.  One would probably assume, not knowing me, that I'm a smoker, but they would be wrong.  It's not that I haven't tried it, and it's not that I didn't like it, but I just don't feel compelled to smoke.  No biggie.  Lord knows, I have enough vices.  But the point is that this opinion comes from someone who is not only not a smoker but also one who has had several roommates in the past who drove him nuts with their smoking habits.  So why do I feel the way I do?

The way I see it, keeping pot illegal is pointless to the point of idiocy.  Look at the facts regarding the drug.  One might argue that the drug is addictive, but simple research would show that there is NO documented case of this.  One also might argue that smoking can lead to health risks.  Of course, this point is so infuriatingly tunnel visioned that it kills itself right out.  One look at a statistic for how many people die of cigarette related complications (15% of all causes) makes one take pause when they see how many die due to smoking pot.  None.  That's right, there are NO documented cases of someone getting cancer or anything else because of smoking weed.

Of course, I'm not saying this is a healthy habit, but it sure beats drinking or smoking, both of which are perfectly legal.  And since I brought up alcohol, how does that compare?  Both substances impair a person's motor functions, but how many times have you heard of someone getting in a high driving accident?  Naturally no one should be driving while using either, but the point is, alcohol is legal but marijuana isn't.

And what about all the time, energy and money spent to legally enforce the cessation of pot sales and consumption in the US.  Maybe all those DEA agents and so forth would have something better to do like catching murderers and stuff if they didn't have to worry about some college kid getting stoned in his dorm room.  Ah, in a perfect world...

So what brought on this rant?  I saw an article today in one of the free newspapers where I live.  It was talking about medicinal marijuana and whether or not it was actually useful or just a farce.  They had a story in there about a 64 year old man.  The guy has hepatitis C, and he's pretty much ready to meet his maker any day.  He actually doesn't expect to live for more than a year or so.  Anyway, this guy has difficulty eating, because due to the surgeries that removed his pancreas and spleen, everything tastes like dirt and he has no appetite.  Now think about that.  This man can't EAT.  So he smokes, and it helps him to eat.  So what happens to him?  He gets busted by the cops!  So they do their thing and he gets out and goes home.  He figures they'll probably make him pay some fine or something.  So he goes on trying to live what life he has left and goes on smoking to help with his condition.  Six months later, a whole team of deputies surrounds his house and finds marijuana again.  Despite his age, his condition, the fact that he can't work, and the fact that the only thing that has worked to aid this dying man in being able to eat is a little weed, local authorities are still going forward with a prosecution.  The man is dying, assholes!  Let him get high!

The whole thing just irritates me.  I just don't think it's right for somebody to deem a substance such as MJ as illegal and then go down to the corner bar and get a drink and have a smoke.  It just doesn't make any sense.

*sigh*  ranting makes me tired...

An interesting point, this kind of thing has always been a gray area for me.

You forgot mandatory minimum sentences.  People who go in have to have a minimum sentence of... say... 8 years.  The time they spend in jail will more than teach them the "real" bad things one can do to land them in prison.  Let's not forget the amount of money the tax payers must shell out to keep them there that long, and the amount of police officers who are distracted by someone smoking out rather than dedicating those people to catching rapists, murderers, thieves and conspirators.

Oh man, the legalization of Marijuana and the many facades that surround such an intricate topic....I'll tell you, about the story you read in the newspaper...Marijuana not only helps with appetite but it is a very good suppression of aqueous humor build-up in diseases such as Glaucoma. Ya know, it's a funny thing how our government doesn't want to help people.... Don't they realize that the whole negative connotation around Marijuana is due to the 1960s and 70s drug outburts including much more detrimental substances such as LSD and PCP. I mean...really....maybe they should look into it a little more...Is pot really as bad as they think??? Im not saying that Pot is completely harmless....In SOME people it may cause really bad things to occur (but that is much the same for drinking Alcohol)....So, Honestly, I don't know how harmful it is or could be (long-term diseases attributed to the smoking of marijuana), and we won't know...no one will..... until the fucking government allows a Longitudinal or correlational study to be done in order to obtain data that determines how harmful of a substance it is. But, considering our government doesn't find such a study to be "ethical"--meaning actually allowing people to get high in order to obtain information--this type of study cannot be conducted...therfore cannot persuade the people to press for the legalization of marijuana because we will have "NO CONCRETE PROOF". Well fuck you very much Mr. Government...because you won't let me get that proof...lol ya know?

So, yea....anyway...let the old guy get high......and you and you and you and you.....     :)

Thanks Chris for your oh, so dutiful pledge to the government about the legalization of pot :)

why is OUR government in the biz of saving us from ourselves?  why can't we do as we please in our own homes, if we aren't doing harm to others?  good points throughout this comment list and post!  i just can't understand why pot is seen as such a hazard by those of the Highest authority...hmm.  however, i think that decriminalization is the best answer...at least for these times.  if it were made legal, smokers and growers would have to deal with the incessant regulation and taxation by the governmant and those who seek to own it as a commodity.  "reefer madness" by Eric Schlosser gets into the debate a good bit.

DUDE!  I could go on for days and days on this topic, but I think that you hit all the major points of argument as far as I'm concerned.  However, a couple things come to mind:

1.  Hemp can be used for a lot of different things other than pot smoking, such as fuel for our vehicles (which would eliminate the excessive gas prices we pay), clothing, and rope.  Hemp is used in lotions and make up.  It is probably the single most versitle plant that exists on this Earth, yet Americans cannot grow it because it's a controlled substance.

2.  Alcohol.  There is not stupider rule than the one in Indiana that says you can't purchase alcohol at the store on Sunday and take it home to drink it.  No, no, no, you need to go and drink it at your local watering hole and then try to drive home without hurting someone or being pulled over.  WTF?!?

3.  Eating.  Yeah...Mr. old guy that keeps getting arrested isn't the only person this affects.  If I didn't smoke some of that stuff on a daily basis, I'd probably be an anorexic.  I just don't get hungry like most people do.  Once a day is about it, unless I smoke some herb.

That's all I have for right now.

Couldn't agree more with your sentiments. Upholding the illegality of marijuana is fighting a war that will never be won. Never.
