Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

I hope we find you in good form this week. Its getting near the silly season for music lovers now with lots of best of releases and rubbish compilations so I hope this helps ease the pain as we try not to sell you lots of music that you may already have but with a different sleeve.

Our highlights this week include
- The most recent album by A Place To Bury Strangers is finally in stock on vinyl with a bonus disc featuring tracks not on the cd.
- One of our Irish highlights this weeks comes from A Shadow and his mini album "The Twisted Logic Of A Sound Mind", the album comes in a cloth hand made sleeve and all copies are numbered. Only 50 copies are available in total.

A place to bury strangers-A place to bury strangers [with bonus vinyl]-At last a vinyl version of this album which came out on cd only originally on the killer pimp label. Ever wonder what joy division, my bloody valentine and the jesus and mary chain would sound like jamming together. This dark hearted noisy little gem of an album has the goth tinged new wave sounds of joy division blended with the discordant guitar assault of early mary chain and the layered guitar effects of my bloody valentine. The production is the real gem on this album though as its the closest thing to the martin hannet sound i have heard in years. The album is dripping with reverb sound effects and perfectly placed synth sound effects. If you want to hear something close to the classic psychocandy album then this will be total heaven to you. This new version on the rocketgirl label now comes with a bonus vinyl features five extra tracks not on the original version. The bonus album comes pressed on orange etched vinyl too. A shadow-The twisted logic of a sound mind-A shadow is a dublin based sound artist by the name of keith murphy and as far as we know this is his debut release. The mini album is released through his own label and comes superbly packaged in a large hand made cloth sleeve. All comes are numbered and there are only 50 copies in total out there. The album kind of reminds me at times of something akin to john fahey playing over the glitchy soundscapes of christian fennesz where beautifully plucked acoustic guitar sounds gently flow over constantly changing distjointed electronic ambience. Backward loops create a kind of droning hypnotic sound that fans of the likes of kranky records will instantly fall in love with. The album also has some of that harsh brittle sound of the likes of biosphere whilst also dipping into some kind of drone based psyche folk vibe. Its one of those albums that really comes to live when listened to on a pair of headphones or else very very loud in a quiet room. It really is a wonderful collection of ever evolving sounds and a new artist to keep a close eye on. Adams, ryan and the cardinals-Cardinology-Ryan adams returns with backing band the cardinals in tow for a brand new twelve track collection on the lost highway label. Its sounds like a case of carry on where we left off with this new album as adams extends the rootsy rock sounds of previous album easy tiger. The album features plenty of his trademark downbeat country roots sounds and lots of that laid back seventies alt rock vibe. On the more country tinged sounds the band throw in lots of lovely lush slide guitar action and adams really evokes the sounds of the great gram parsons whilst on the more rocking tracks you can hear the totally loose laid back vibes of the likes of the grateful dead. Amadou and mariam-Welcome to mali-A brand new album from two of malis finest pop stars and the long awaited follow up to dimanche a bamako from all the way back in 2004. The album features production from marc antoine moreau and laurent jais who co produced the last album with manu chao. The album also features a track with damon albarn behind the desk. Along with these the album also features guest appearences from keziah jones, k naan, juan rozoff and tiken jah fakoli. Its very much an album that carries on from the pure african pop themes of diamanche with one of two of the tracks features just a little more electronic beats. November 2008-Cd-Because music-€18.99

Boston spaceships-Brown submarine [featuring rob pollard from guided by voices]-Robert pollard from guided by voices returns with a brand new project and a brand new band too. Having released a couple of solo album since the demise of guided by voices pollard gets a new band behind him featuring john moen from the decemberists and chris slusarenko from the takeover and sprinkler. Its back to basics classic indie rock from pollard again with this album featuring fourteen top notch tunes with that distinctive slacker rock meets beatles like pop sounds. This man writes such top quality tunes which always have a distinctive pop like feel to them and this one kind of reminds me of a more underground indie like take on the sounds of the of the kinks. Bottom floor band-Epophant-The debut five track ep from this new irish based acoustic folk outfit. Features gypsy face, becketts dream, the banks of denial, days are over and love me or leave me. The ep features a blend of classic acoustic folk, hints of balkan folk sounds and just a tiny bit of old time dramatic cabaret. November 2008-Cds-Own label-€5.99

Burnes, andrew-Telescope [limited edition etched vinyl]-The seventh installment in the ongoing guitar series of releases from the table of the elements label. The album comes pressed on very very limited green marble effect vinyl. Its a one sided album with the second side featuring a limited etching. Andrew burnes is also a member of san agustin along with recent contributor to the series david daniell. The album features a beatiful lenghty piece of droning ambience with just the barest hints of minimal plucked notes on electric guitar. Its the kind of thing that would be very much at home on a label like kranky and definitely one for fans of shimmering drone sounds. November 2008-Lp-Table of the elements-€21.99

Casiotone for the painfully alone-The first two albums-As the title might suggest this is a collection featuring the first two album from owen ashworth aka casiotone for the painfully alone. The album features pocket symphonies for lonesome subway cars and answering machine music. Its a collection of throbbing synth led scuzzy electro pop sounds with lots of retro casio beats and synth bass. Its a totally lo fi collection of purely intimate bedroom indie sounds except ashworth uses cheap keyboards instead of out of tune guitars. Seventy two minutes of lo fi pop fuzziness that will have you dancing around your damp bedsits all night long. November 2008-Cd-Tomlab-€18.99

Childs, euros-Cheer gone-The fourth solo album from the former member of gorkys zygotic mynci. Childs recorded the album in nashville with producer mark nevers and the album features a host of guests including matt swanson from lambchop, chris scruggs on lap stee, jamey lampkins on banjo and veteran fiddle player glen duncan. The album is a really lovely blend of childs trademark laid back kind of psyche pop and mellow old school country vibes featuring plenty of piano led late night ballads. Its a perfectly lush affair which sees the nashville tinged sounds of the guest musicians complementing childs superb songwriting. November 2008-Cd-Wichita-€15.99

Electronic sensoria band with gavin duffy-Live at the joinery [september 2008]-Limited to only 50 copies on the irish based ninepoint label. The cd comes housed in a lovely card sleeve with printed paper inner. The electronic sensoria band or e+s=b as they are also called features the former drummet and bass player from dublin based free rock outfit the wormholes whilst gavin duffy is a member of both thread pulls and cap pas cap. The album features seven cuts of loose avant rock sounds with a certain leaning towards a kind of freeform krautrock with a distinctly avant jazz like feel coming from the brass. Flaming lips-Christmas on mars-The long awaited flaming lips arrives. Described by the band themselves as a fantastical film freakout. This special edition double set features a dvd and a full cd of film music. The dvd features the film with both surround sound and stereo mixes, 25 minutes of interviews with the band, behind the scenes with wayne coyne and his yellow pad, zeta bootis theatre intros, super secret outtake scene, russian subtitles, zeta bootis surround sound test sequence and a booklet with conceptual rants and notes. Flipron-Gravity calling-English based outfit on the tiny dog records label. The album was produced by damned drummer rat scabbies. The last time we heard from these guys was in 2006 with their album biscuits for cerberus and this new collection is another weird and wonderful collection of strangely psychedelic off kilter pop sounds which at times kind of reminds me a wee bit of the likes of the coral with a slightly more sixties psyche pop slant to them. Grubbs, david-An optimist notes the dusk-David grubbs returns with a new album on the drag city label with guests michael evans on drums and nate wooley on trumpet. Apart from the two guests its pretty much mr grubbs with his exceptional guitar picking and voice all the way. The album features six long and rather beautifully contruscted pieces of music with grubbs adding the minimal amount of vocals over his sparse guitar picking sounding like experimental john fahey meets the no wave of early sonic youth. Headless heroes-The silence of love [featuring alela diane on vocals]-A covers project spearheaded by eddie bezalel and featuring the talents of josh klinghoffer, woddy jackson, joey waronker, mike green, gus seyffert, leo abrahams, dirty pretty strings, mike boldger and the awesome voice of alela diane. The pirates gospel by alela diane was one of the finest folk albums of last year and its great to have her back taking on these classic songs. Her space holiday-Xoxo panda and the new kid revival-Her space holiday aka marc bianchi returns with a brand new album for the wichita label. Gone are the keyboards and electronic sounds of previous albums as bianchi goes for an all new and much more oganic live based sound on this collection. An album based in a much more lo fi indie rock kind of sound with the odd hint of the keyboard heavy space rock of the likes of spiritualized or spacemen 3 from time to time. Jay reatard-Singles 06 07 [in the red compilation]-Not to be confused with the new collection of singles from 2008 on the matador this collection featuring a host of out of print singles from jay reatard released on many different labels in 2006 and 2007. Pretty much all of these singles are sold out and impossible to track down so this is your best way to gather them all together. The album features 17 rare gems from one of the most profilific songwriters around at the moment. He may release a single nearly every month but the quality simply never drops with reatard. The tracks have all been remastered by reatard himself. This here is a man who can so easily turn his hand to everything from scuzzed up indie rock to punk to new wave to pure indie pop within the space of just one album. Kings of leon-Only by the night [limited edition double vinyl]-The kings of leon return with their fourth album to date and possibly their biggest soujnding record so far. Its only been a year since their last album because of the times and this new one features a much bigger almost stadium rock like feel with tons of synth sounds and reverb laden guitar effects. Its a big departure from the early days of youth and young manhood. The album features the singles sex on fire, crawl and use somebody. Lucksmiths-First frost-The return of this australian based indie pop outfit on the fortuna pop label. These guys have always reminded me of australias answer to belle and sebastian with the folky based indie pop sounds and slightly sixties tinged take on that sound. Just like their previous album warmer corners the album is full of lush string sounds, slide guitar action and live brass. The album is full of solid and catchy indie pop gems not too unlike their fellow australians the go between at times with lots of jangly guitar action. November 2008-Cd-Fortuna pop-€14.99

Mad river-Mad river-The original 1968 debut album from this san francisco psyche rock outfit. Reissued on the original capitol label featuring all the original sleeve artwork too. This is only one of two albums made by mad river and its still widely regarded as one of the finest psyche album from this perio. Its one of those classic late sixties psyche albums featuring a perfect blend of more direct blues tinged garage rock and then some mind bending guitar led acid tinged psyche rock. Mccormack, barry-Night visiting-The return of the former vocalist with dublin based outfit jubilee. This is mccormacks third solo album to date and sees the singer songwriter return with plenty of solid traditional folk sounds akin to the sounds of the likes of luke kelly crossed with the early acoustic sounds of bob dylan. Its very much an album for lovers of old time storytellers. Comes in a lovely card sleeve featuring a booklet with lyrics. November 2008-Cd-Hags head-€13.99

Mcmorrow, james vincent-The sparrow and the wolf-Limited edition four track ep from james mcmorrow on the irish based label faction records. Features down the burning ropes, there is a place, jacob and we dont eat. Features some lovely mellow acoustic based folky sounds. November 2008-Cds-Faction records-€4.99

Megapuss-Surfing-Brand new side project from one of psyche folks superstars devendra banhart with help from greg rogove, fab morettin, noah gerogeson and aziz ansari. Greg rogove is a member of priestbird and has played on several of banharts albums. Fab moretti is a member of the strokes. Noah georgeson also records under the name find shelter and has worked on several of banharts previous albums. Aziz ansari is a well known actor and comedian having worked on human giant on mtv and the hbo series flight of the conchords.-Cd-Vapor records-€15.99

After their break up in 1978 case and collins went on to form the breakways and were also members of plimsouls and the beat. Peter case has also released several albums under his own name since. The album features a collection of very dramatic orchestral kind of pop meets cabaret songs with hints of fellow labelmate final fantasy and the pure drama of the divine comedy. Its full of wacky stop start arrangements with big washes of violin that kind of calls to mind the likes of van dyke parks working with antony and the johnsons. There is also quite a theatrical feel about the album at times and you can almost imagine this being performed on stage in full costume with an orchestra. Pony club-Post romantic-Album number three from the pony club fronted by irish songwriter marc cullen and their first since parting ways with the setanta label. The album features a collection of 12 lush alternative pop gems with lots of added strings and piano tinkling. The album is full of gritty attitude and heartfelt lyrical content. Pulp fiction-Original soundtrack [180 gram vinyl reissue with bonus mp3 coupon]-Limited edition reissue on 180 gram vinyl and comes in all the original artwork. The album has been specially remastered for this vinyl only reissue and also comes with a bonus mp3 coupon for a free download of the entire album. The album was originally released in 1994 on the mca label. Features tracks from dick dale, kool and the gang, al green, the tornadoes, ricky nelson, dusty springfield, the centurians, chuck berry, urge overkill, maria mckee, the revels, the statler brothers and the lively ones. Raglani-Of sirens born-This album was originally only available as a limited cdr pressing of 100 copies. The album features a superb blend of classic shimmering kranky like drone sounds and some of the early krautrock experimentalism. Its pretty much an entirely beatless collection which features five lengthy slow building pieces of truly beautiful ambience with high pitched drones meeting all manner of found sounds and electronic weirdness. Its a very intricate collection of sounds which really comes to life on headphones with so much going on deep down in the mix. The soulds at times feel like a long drawn out bowed instrument meets an ever evolving synth based drone. November 2008-Cd-Kranky-€18.99

Scorch trio-Brolt-Album number three from this free rock meets avant jazz three piece featuring raoul bjorkenheim, ingebrigt haker and paal nilssen love. The album was recorded pretty much entirely live in the studio on analogue tape and then mixed by deathprod. There is a lovely raw feel about the recordings which features absolutely no overdubs and sees the band totally gel with each other. Apparently the album was recorded at the end of a short tour so you can really get the feeling that the band were just so in tune with each other. Its quite a blistering collection at times featuring some totally howling free rock and avant noise sounds along with some more old school kind of free jazz. Basically its a classic piece of pure eclecticism from the rune grammofon label. Limited edition double vinyl pressing.-2lp-Rune grammofon-€23.99

Smiths-This charming man-The reissue of the classic smiths single on limited edition 7 inch vinyl. The single comes packaged in an exact replica of the original single and features jeane on the flip side. The single was pressed using the original production masters. This is the first in a series of ten singles in total to coincide with the release of the best of compilation the sound of the smiths. Limited to only 3000 copies. November 2008-7"-Rhino-€5.99

Smiths-What difference does it make-The reissue of the classic smiths single on limited edition 7 inch vinyl. The single comes packaged in an exact replica of the original single and features the original b side back to the old house. Boris-Pink [limited edition red vinyl]-Boris are probably one of the finest exponents of droning sludge metal on this planet at this stage. This japanese 3 piece have been releasing some of the finest explosive drone based sounds over the last few years. This new album concentrates a bit more on their more uptempo garage sludge metal. Huge distorted guitars and bass meet the heaviest drum sound you will ever hear. Most of the album is much more melodic and song orientated than the drone based stuff but it certainly doesnt suffer for that. Cloudland canyon-Lie in light-Cloudland canyon follow up last years rather excellent silver tongued sisyphus album with this new seven track collection on the always reliable kranky label. This two piece pretty much take off on a totally modern krautrock buzz from the very first note on this album with opening track krautwerk letting you know exactly where their influences come from. Whilst its very very derivitive of early seventies krautrock there is nothing wrong with that when its done this well. Its full of hypnotic grooves with lots of analog moog sounds and heaps of wah wah laden guitar effects. Imagine kraftwerk jamming with the spacemen 3 along with damo suzuki on vocals. The album also dips into the almost ambient spacerock sounds of either early hawkwind or pink floyd. The album is a superb blend of intricate guitar led post rock sounds and heavy electronic beats. Imagine the guitar sounds of our very own redneck manifesto or even foals blended with the almost funky like beats of four tet. There is still plenty of live drumming going on to complement the heavier beats and also some really lovely mellow moments with gently plucked guitars meetings droning keyboard sounds. Espvall, helena and masaki batoh-Helen espvall and masaki batoh-A rather beautiful collaboration between espers cellist helena espvall and masaki batoh from japanese psyche rockers ghost. The album is a really beatiful collection of rustic psychedelic folk sounds with plenty of medieval and traditional folk influences. Espvall gives the album a particularly haunting vibe with her ethereal vocals which are mostly delivered in her native swedish. The album features a collection of traditional scandanavian folk songs, some brand new compositions and a lovely cover of the classic son house delta blues tune death letter. Holcomb, roscoe-The high lonesome sound-A beautiful 21 track collection of his recordings for the smithsonian label, features a host of material from holcomb recorded between 1961 and 1974, this is pure rustic early folk and blues sounds with a man and his banjo, holcomb had a very distinctive and addictive high pitched voice, some call it harsh i just call it authentic, features a rather lovely laid back version of house of the rising sun along with a wonderful take on leadbellys tune in the pines, the album comes complete with smithsonians superb detailed liner notes and some lovely old photographs, 1998-Cd-Smithsonian-€18.99

In kraut-Volume three [hip shaking grooves made in germany 1967 to 1974]-The third and final installment of this wonderful series on the marina label. The album features 20 nuggets from the german underground soul and funk scene in the late sixties and early seventies. Im sure a lot of these names will be new to you as they are to me but this is some top notch soulful funk and kitch funky pop. Melvins-Nude with boots-Brand new album from the melvins on mike pattons ipecac label and their second album to feature the two boys from big business in the band. Is it just me or are the melvins slowly morphing into some kind of sludge rock psychedelic led zeppelin over the years. Their sound has definitely become much bigger and more fuzzed up since the two boys from big business joined the camp. This is just total rock as only the melvins know how to do. Schmiedt, henning-Klavierraum-This is a really really beautiful collection of solo piano pieces from henning schmeidt. The album features 15 pieces of minimal piano beauty akin to the likes of harold budd in its kind of sparse beauty and gentle ambience. This is an album very much in the realms of modern classical with schmiedt preferring not to tinker too much with post production and just allows the stunning reverb of the room to provide all the necessary ambience. The album features a damn fine collection of country tinged pop sounds with a lovely old style retro sound. Its kind of like a trip through many different musical movements since the fifties with bits of early country tinged rock n roll, sixties folk pop and blissful seventies pop. Deschanel has the most beautiful voice falling somewhere between the rough edges of june carter and the totally smooth tones of karen carpenter. Imagine the carter family brought up to date blended with early fifties rock n roll and lots of nashville country twang. Silver ray-Homes for everyone-The fourth album from this instrumental three piece based in melbourne australia. The album features a collection of truly beautiful almost cinematic like post rock sounds with a bit of everything from early dirty three to a more laid back godspeed to piano based film soundtracks. There is a real feeling of space about this album as you almost feel yourself being taking off on a journey through the rustic australian outback. Its very very catchy at times whilst also retaining a nice rough edge to it thanks to the sometimes snarly vocal delivery. Tomokawa, kazuki-Blue water red water-This japanese poet has been making psychedelic folk music for nearly 40 years now and finally we can get our hands on a reasonably priced album thanks to the psf label releasing this new one. The album sounds like a medieval japanese take on the sounds of early tom waits. The album is full of strange medieval folk instruments over which kazuki lays his very dramatic almost burlesque like vocal sounds. There are plenty of late sixties psychedelic folk influences in here too along with the odd hint of traditional british and irish folk. Wonderfully strange stuff. August 2008-Cd-Psf-€19.99

Velvet underground-Another view [limited edition 180 gram pressing]-A collection of rare and unreleased tracks from 1967 to 1969. The album was originally compiled in 1986 and has been out of print on vinyl for many years now. Now reissued on the 4 men with beards label on heavy 180 gram vinyl.
