I've started working on the illustrations for a new childrens' book at the end of December, and work continues apace. But even though it's early days,  I'm beginning to struggle with the subject matter.

The problem is I need to draw a fair few different animals but they must meet a series of quite stringent criteria:

  • Must have an exclusive or near exclusive diet
  • Cannot eat frogs
  • Cannot be a creature that frogs eat (flies, worms etc)
  • Cannot eat flies or fly-like bugs or things that frogs eat (worms, slugs etc)
  • Must be a natural diet not like 'Dogs eat dogfood' or 'Mice eat cheese'

I thought it'd be quite easy to think of lots but having done a few I'm at a loss now.

Hmm, sounds complicated, here's a few I thought of:

Hedgehog - slugs and snails
Hamster - sunflower seeds
Otter - fish
Owl - mice
Squirrel - nuts and acorns
Rabbit - lettuce

I'll see what Google comes up with too

Thanks for the suggestions!

The Squirrel is great as is the otter, but Hamsters don't really eat only sunflower seeds and the same with rabbits and lettuce. That's kind of what I was getting at with the 'dogs eat dogfoot' thing.

The Marine Iguana is SPOT ON excellent. Thank you.

The grass eaters are in my 'might do' list if I run out of other ideas and the polar bear is another great suggestion. I'd forgotten about their limited diet, because they would eat other things if they could but 90% of the time seals are all that's available!

Many thanks!

Could you get away with an anteater eating termites?  Or is that too close to stuff frogs eat?

Also already done (but I'd forgotten to add it to the list so well done anyway!)

Puffin - excellent suggestion and the same with the Vampire bat. Crossbill is a good standby too.

I know what you mean about lollypop ladies...
