Who Gives Kudos:

Sunday, September 30, 2007
I just thought I should write this to anyone who is interested.

It's been reported in a couple of reviews (the NME and The Independent) that at our Brixton Academy show I made a comment to the audience "You are a bunch of miserable bastards".
Some people might think it's no big deal but I think it's actually important to point out that I did in fact say "WE are a bunch of miserable bastards", which seemed appropriate at the time as it was just after the song "Happy When it Rains".

I've asked both of these publications to print a retraction, but I'd have more chance of the editors coming round cleaning my toilets. I have been told that they will print my letter though. So let's wait and see...

But for what it's worth, and for whoever cares, it amazes me that we can still play in venues such as The Brixton Academy, and that anyone cares enough to come, I certainly don't take a Jesus and Mary Chain audience for granted.

Well, i reckon that bunch at nme definitely ought to come and clean your toilet... with their toothbrushes! I noticed your review was tucked away in a corner too.

I was lucky enough to catch your show in Barcelona in July, and obviously you know that none of us fans will ever take you lot for granted either - it was the best part of 10 years since i'd last seen you guys, and i must say it was worth every second of the wait to see and hear you again. Unfortunately i was working abroad for the Brixton show, but anyway I really look forward to hearing more new stuff - All Things Must Pass is quality.

Anyway, thanks for all the tunes and happiness over the years.

Mat.

Well I think it's great that you take the time to do that. If it's possible, everyone will just think even more of you now!
I wish I could have made that gig, but fingers crossed we get another one soon....

dude,

Don't worry about it. It's just a beat up by the newspapers wanting to sell more of their drivel. Keep rocking.

Hi Jim...

I saw you play at The Electric Picnic in Ireland this year - I hadn't seen you boys play since 1989 when Automatic came out, so after almost 20 years, I really wasn't expecting the gig to be any way half decent... but fuck me, I was blown away - myself & my mates, danced & sand the whole way through the set & loved every fucking minute of it.. If it wasn't for the fact that William's put on a few pounds (well, stone, but I'm trying to be nice!) - I could've been back in the late 80s / early 90s!!

You say above that you "certainly don't take a Jesus and Mary Chain audience for granted.".. well I will never take a JAMC gig for granted again - can't wait for the next one.. and as ABBA once said

"Thank you for the Music"!!!!

But I, for one, am a miserable bastard, so the misquote was justified.

We all know how mis-quotes can hang around you for a long time Jim ..lived with it.....usually made by some scenester journalist from press-school who wouldnt know a good record if it shat in their face ... gay dad anyone ? The Jesus and Mary Chain still mean as much now as they did the day i bought my 7" of upside down and got the dj to play it at my local sat night bellshill disco to the horror of the 2.4 children crew ....memories !

Underestimating your audience? Probaly yourself? We all love you and I will always try to be in the audience. Dear Jim, you don't seem to realize how much you and William changed my life and many others. The audience in your past few gigs particularly the Festival Hall, which I have never seen so full, except for the last time you played there with John Peel, proved that.

Best to you all.

Pip.
