Dear Senator Obama,

I've spent time this summer working with a friend of mine to help raise money for New Orleans, LA.  It saddens me that our country has not returned  that city and its citizens to the way they were before Hurricane Katrina.

It is nearly 2 years after the Hurricane and areas of New Orleans are still devastated.  People are being given a pitance of what their homes were worth.  Prices of available housing have risen and so has the cost of living.  Major chain stores like Walmart and Target refuse to return to these areas and there is a general loss of available jobs.  Oil companies are buying up land and offering people settlements for oil spilt during the floods.

I live in the Chicago suburbs and watch new neighborhoods being constructed within only a few months time.  It has been 2 years since the Hurricane and we haven't made a dent in getting people back into homes in the areas where they used to live.  And some housing has been built on lots that have been cut into smaller lots than pre-Katrina to make it more profitable for the owner of the land.

As an American, I feel we need to do something about this.  Awareness should be raised and something should be done.  Upon being made aware of the situation most Americans want to do something to help.  Granted it is not always easy to help, but we have American citizens that are being forgotten.  We can do more.  Something needs to be done to ensure that the corruption and underhandedness going on in New Orleans is stopped.  And we need to get people back in homes and living a half-way normal existence after being put through such a tragedy.

It never should've taken this long.

One letter is not enough. Please feel free to send one of your own. Or copy and paste mine and sign your name. If you can ask a few of your friends and sign their names as well, all the better.

Thanks,
Bob

I do what I can do. And really until I see some things change in this world, I cannot do enough.

See that reply up above and please do likewise.

a letter of your own or a copy of mine with lots of names attached would be much appreciated. For some reason, Senator Obama seems a better one to petition than the others. But if you feel so inclined to write other senators, please do.

Thanks,
Bob

We can work wonders in this world like moving hundreds of thousands of military into place for a war. I think we can rebuild New Orleans faster than we have.

This is outstanding, Bob. Thank you for taking this extra step! I plan on writing all of the candidates. So far, John Edwards is the only one who sent volunteers down en-masse to help gut out houses back in the early days when this place still liked the site of a nuclear holocaust. I'm not going to wait to see what the others will do: I'm going to follow your lead and tell them what we need and ask them what they plan to do about it. We don't want a hand-out, we want protection from a super-inflated economy and affordable housing options. We want our sewer systems repaired and our roads fixed; we MUST HAVE OUR PUMPS WORKING AND OUR LEVEES IMPROVED. We need the MRGO closed and we need environmenalists and engineers to get together to figure out the best way to rebuild our wetlands. These are short term and long term solutions we're seeking; I'd like to see someone make a promise to hear us out. ~ Rhonda

you have forgotten how much Obama has done through habitat, and the ninth ward. He is here almost every other month since 8/29. Edwards meant well, by standing in the ninth, and announcing his presidency, but Obama had already outdone him. Obama was here immediatly, and shoveling dirt from flooded homes in the ninth. he spoke at essence the opening night, I think Obama, and BUSHCLINTON katrina fund have put light on so much, and Jimmy Carter and his wife pointing out that bush has done nothing.

the politicians have to be careful how they treat this situation. Fear of using it to push themselves into an election vs... actually helping out. Obama even worked on city park. He has done so much, and very quietly. But Barry has actually done more than all of them. I know barry... barack.... he went to high school in hawaii with my ex husband. he is a very caring individual, who could be flaunting his ethnicity, and instead chooses to show compassion... he is setting a quiet example. He could be viewed as controversial, instead he has shown he is worrthy....

He also will carry the black vote... without standing on a pulpit and preaching to the choir...

pray that the convention center wins, and we have a presidential debate in our beloved city... THEN you MIGHT see some interest. As long as we continue to be the OIL baron country we are, and as long as the powers that be continue on this road, and we the state of LA continue to BOW down to our own corrupt BS, nothing will change. There is light at the end of the tunnel, The Convention Center, a symbol of embarressment, might become a symbol of hope. This week is Essence, and who is here? OBAMA and CLINTON... and its the women of the storm, fighting for that presidential debate, to put light on the subject...

Thanks for letting me know about "Barry" as you call him! Goes to show you how quietly he is doing his work. But Edwards was down here, too, in St. Bernard Parish. He didn't advertise, either. Hillary Clinton, sorry, I have trust issues with her. But from the get-go, I liked Obama; perhaps his work down here will be the thing that pushes him ahead of the rest for me. We'll see.

We need to stop relying on the government. That is what got us in to this predicament in the first place. Obviously they are not very reliable. We need to help ourselves and our neighbors. I have contributed and will continue to contribute as much time and money as I can to help all of my friends, family and others who were affected by the hurricane. We appreciate all the time and effort that you have taken out of your life to be here for us. God bless you for your generosity.

I believe the government can help. The government really isn't our problem, it is people in the government. I'm not talking about good ol' George either. Somewhere far down the line funds that have been allocated for Katrina are being used up, but not being put to good use.

If you pound on the door of the government long enough, they might see that their dog is pooping in your yard(just being funny). I think we can get them to come clean it up.

Right-on, Bob! As Jeff can tell you, we're already doing what we can to help ourselves and our neighbors down here, but it's unrealistic to think we can fix levees or rebuild wetlands or even fix the freaking pumping stations and the collapsed sewer system! We are doggedly doing everything we can, almost every day except for those days when we have to STOP to take care of our own health issues. I'm a tax payer, and I deserve more of the people whose paychecks I contribute to in government. We all do.

Hello Bob,it is sad what is happening in New Orleans. It is the biggest theft of land in North America since the Native Americans were forced to live on reservations. It boils down to second class people, ones that are "undesirable"they were living on valuable realestate. This land is being bought up by the greedy developers in that area. New Orleans will eventually be re-built,but at the cost of displacing "the undesirables"...history repeats itself. In this case it was the African Americans that got burned again. So sad. The Army corp of engineers knew for decades that the levee's were inadiquite to protect this land. I would bet my life that you will start seeing some high end housing and cushy neighborhoods sprouting in the future. Your determination to help these people has not fallen on deaf ears. I hope Obama reads your words,I'm certain he already knows what has happened there being an African American. Have a wonderful day ahead and always better tomorrows...
