Wheeling Heritage Blues Festival 2008 by BB Steve
"Saturday brought us an outstanding performance by the Blue Bella Revue featuring Nick Moss and Bill Lupkin. This group gave us the most oustanding performance of the festival in the form of three tunes delivered by Gerry Hundt on mandolin. Absolutely amazing. He was content to play rhythm guitar during the rest of the performance. Something of a wunderkind Gerry also has the harp, trumpet, and sax in his repertoire. When I asked him if he'd ever had lessons on any of these instruments his response was no - he'd learned them on his own - by ear. Wunderkind indeed. For the
first time I got to see Watermelon Slim. I much enjoyed his sweet licks on the harp and that gruff singing voice. Blues supergroup The Mannish Boys finished the evening off in fitting fashion."
Disclaimer: I don't actually play trumpet, and my saxophone is limited to some tonally-challenged squawks from fifth-grade band. Nick, in introducing me onstage, typically goes through an ever-changing laundry list of instruments for comedic effect. My favorite bit is "...dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer - there's a difference, y'know." That, and Bob Carter from behind the drums, "Valve trombone!"
