LIONS DEN – 'Lions Den' (Ugly & Proud) NICK
It's always great when I'm impressed by a band when I see them live and then one of their CDs turns up in the post for me to review a few days later. So it is for Swedish hardcore outfit Lions Den, who left a definite positive impression when I caught them at Runnin' Riot Festival and leave an equally positive impression on this 10-track CD. While it brings together two releases – the seven-songs that make up their debut EP and a three-song demo – there's not much difference between the two musically, as they deliver a consistently strong brand of fast, furious pissed-off hardcore, topped off with some super-aggressive vocals from singer Erik. While they make no qualms about their straight edge beliefs, lyrically there's no feeling of preachiness, with the focus instead on articulating pure, vitriolic anger which perfectly complements the chugging riffs and meaty breakdowns that define the band's sound as being in the vein of Guns up!, Blacklisted and maybe even American Nightmare. Stand-out tracks include 'Eye For An Eye' and 'Turn Cold' but this is a consistently strong outfit that makes Lions Den out as another quality band from mainland Europe.

Lions Den - s/t cd
The water in Sweden must be polluted cause here's another great
hardcore band coming from that country. Where Go For Broke and Balance
fit in the youth crew box I love so much, Lions Den plays hardcore that
usually is a bit out of my league. We all know Terrors'
Lowest Of The Low is a modern classic that influenced a lot of other
bands. Most of these bands exaggerate the metal riffs though and end up
as a fast but lame version of Hatbreed. Lions Den however mainly uses
the anger and rage we all know from Terror and combine it with
songstructures which could've been on early Blacklisted and Guns Up! records. This formula combined with a personal message pretty much sums up Lions Den.
The record sounds very hard and tends to get on my nerves because I like a
little bit of melody every now and then between the fast riffs and
moshparts. That said Lions Den proves one of the worthy successors to
Terrors' thrown and is one fine more example that straight edge
hardcore still lives.

Twisted Wrongs & Crooked Rights (NL) // http://www. myspace. com/twistedwrongs

Another cool Swedish straight edge hardcore band, this time from Linköping. Lions Den was started by members of Go For Broke and The Romance, among ohters, but they already left the band by the time of recording this release. The majority of these songs are heavy, moshable hardcore not unlike No Warning, Right Brigade. The last couple of songs are a bit faster, combining this with some higher pitched vocals Blacklisted comes to mind. It's all well done. I can imagine crowds going off to this, actually, I think I would as well. Corey of Internal Affairs once said like: "You don't need to know the words to be a part of this. The fast parts are meant for you to run across the stage and dive into the crowd. The singalongs are meant to climb on top of each other and as soon as the mosh part starts, just hit the person left of you in the face!" He couldn't have been more right and looking at the record as a whole, it has everything you need.
