WORLD MUSIC ON YOUTUBE
New on our youtube channel (youtube.com/wfsuoutloud) will be a series of videos by Haiqiong Deng on each of the traditional Chinese schools of music. These pieces were recorded at Maclay Gardens for a recently premiered episode of outloud. A couple of the pieces were in the program but four of the pieces will be seen for the first time.
Each of the videos will feature a music example first, and then an explanation of the piece and technique used. Haiqiong is one of the world's premiere players; currently she teaches the Chinese Ensemble at FSU. The music is a treat for any music lover, and her explanations would be beneficial to students of world music, world culture, or just those of us with interest in these topics. She is as knowledgeable as she is musically talented.
And, as in the program, there will be Chinese calligraphy by Nan Liu, Haiqiong's husband.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS
We will premiere two new outloud episodes this July for both 4fsu and WFSU-TV. Will release air dates and bands soon.
Also in July is the premiere of an FSU College of Music concert, the Rainbow Concert. This is FSU's world music concert, and features Steel Drum, Gamelan, Irish Folk, Salsa, Mexican, Ugandan, and Andean music, to name a few. A couple of performers featured on outloud perform both with their ensembles and solo: Haiqiong Deng with the Chinese Ensemble and Charles Atkins with the FSU Blues Lab. The theme for this year's show is honoring the directors of the different ensembles. This is Dr. Dale Olsen's last year heading the Ethnomusicology department at FSU; we sat down and talked to him about his years here (including why he started the Rainbow Concert).
FSU Rainbow Concert-
Tuesday, July 15 @ 7:00 PM
on 4fsu (Comcast 4 on Leon, Gadsden, and Wakulla counties)
In September WFSU-TV will premiere a special on the Piano Technology program at FSU. You'll be taken through the rebuilding of a 1954 Mason & Hamlin grand piano. That piano is the sister piano to the one we keep in our studio- the one we use on outloud! After restoration, the piano is brought into the studio to be played side by side with the not-restored piano by FSU professors Norma and Leonard Mastrogiacomo. The not-restored piano then gets wheeled out, and the "newer" one is played by FSU jazz faculty Bill Peterson and FSU Assistant Professor of Piano Heidi Louise Williams. We produced a short video about the restoration process, catch it at youtube.com/wfsuoutloud.
