Current mood: happy
I wrote a blog a while back about some of the "bad reviews" I got off slicethepie.com because some of them were funny, and I wanted to explain why I didn't feel discouraged :) (Why reviews are silly, or at least bad ones). But I've just read Ellie Lawson's blog on her great reviews off slicethepie.com - she's up for finance! And thought, I must write about my great ones too, that's much more positive!! These are the reviews for 3 songs that are up at the moment, Blessings, What if and Safe To Say.
Blessings (about 7/10)For me, the best part of the song was the lyrics. The singer discusses a topic near and dear to many adult women's heart and that is coming to terms with one's own true size and shape and not wanting to look like some super skinny model with perfect teeth and hair and fake body parts. Learning to love ones own self without needing to be fake or flawless. The vocals are cute and the instrumentals are basic. More of a statement song. (6/10)
Really like this track as it was an easy listening tune that was soft and chilled out and you could just have on in the background over and over again. Hints of an Alanis Morissette feel to it as the lead vocalist on this track has a great voice voice. Overall a well above average track and would not be surprised if this artist makes the showcase. (8/10)
I liked this track, the vocals sounded pure and flowed really well. The guitarinstrumentals worked very well with the vocalist. Both were easy to make out. the lyrics were great and this is a track i definately would buy. One of the best I have heard on SlicethePie. (10/10) Safe to Say (about 7/10)
I like vocals voice. Very natural and professional. It sounded very good. Pleasant and very charming voice. Soothing music that will lower my blood pressure. Decent lyrics as well. The guitar accompaniment sounded fantastic as well. Very consistent and has good timing. Musical arrangement was well engineered and crafted. Awesome music! (9/10)
Making a smash hit from a rather ordinary record such as this isn’t easy, but it can be achieved with some work. Rarely does the listener get so much satisfaction from the lyrics of a song, because rarely is a vocal performance so clear, but this track would be enormously improved and strengthened with a little more vigour in the musical arrangement. (8/10)
What if (about 7/10)
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear something like this out of the Scrubs soundtrack. The song is definitely impressive. The simple yet powerful guitar playing sets the listener in the mood for the well-written lyrics, which are incredibly relatable and clear. The singing is lovely and passionate, and it avoids the usual conflict that rises between guitar and vocals in many acoustic projects. This track stands out for its simplicity: it’s the easiest way to deal with fears common to every human being, and it feels like it could be the soundtrack to those particular moment in life when a choice is needed, or when doubt is all that remains. (8/10)
I love this song. If I made a movie, I'd choose this song. It has a romantic sound to it. (10/10)
A personal message regarding the song ~
Hi Steph. I came across your music on Slice The Pie and was really taken by your music. I listened to What If, and it nearly brought me to tears, something that only a James Yuill song and Edelweiss from the Sound of Music have previously caused. What can I say? These reviews make me feel very happy! Tomorrow I'm going to finally send some EPs off, and also probably record some more youtube videos, because it's great fun and I've got plenty of new songs! I don't know where they're coming from!
Oh, and I'm off to the recording studio this coming week too! Love Steph xxxxxxxx
