It was the third of May, 1999. Weather was good here in the California desert, but the news cast was talking up some pretty turbulent sounding stuff in Oklahoma.
My mom and dad lived in Del City, a suburb of the Oklahoma City.
I tried a phone call to them, getting a busy signal. Tried again, and the same busy signal. This was strange, as they ALWAYS answered the phone. They left it off the hook, maybe?
Again and again I tried, finally deciding to call my brother who lived in Austin, Texas, just to see if he had any idea of what might be going on.
My sister-in-law answered their phone. "They're OK, Dennis found them in the community center building in Del City", she started. That was the first I had heard that my parents home was gone. They were fine, other than the trauma. An F5 tornado, one of the worst in U.S. history up until then, had destroyed their home, along with a good part of Del and Midwest Cities, in Oklahoma.
Well, the story goes on. But in light of anniversary date and the weather being experienced in those states right now, I thought I'd share some of what I saw when I arrived in Del City,Oklahoma, the day after the storm of May 3, 1999.

Welcome!

Dad said he thought it time to hit the walk-in closet, when the trees in the yard were horizontal.
He covered Mom in the corner of the closet (door), while all Hell broke loose around them. They said it got pretty scary when the roof left.

Insurance rep showed up to offer some help. The next door neighbors house was the impromptu meeting place.

Around the neighborhood, spirits remained high, regardless of the devastation.
Bill Clinton stopped by.

WOW! Incredible and powerful images Danny. The video was very intense! The storms were bad this morning, but thank God they had died down a bit. There is a mountain that protects us in the valley. When those storms hit that mountain it usually splits up and misses. Note I said "usually"! We have had a few tornados hit the area. Thanks for sharing these images and the story.

Wow, there is a lot of emotion in the video and in your photos! The power displayed is another huge reminder that there are certain things which we have no control over.....a very chilling reminder of the power of the creator!
I can't imagine being in this devastating situation! The last photo is absolutely one in a million! Thank you for the time you put into this display.

Powerfully intense video and devastatingly sad pics! My heart goes out to anyone who has been a victim of mother nature... I have lived through more than my share of hurricanes here in lower Alabama but those tornadoes scare the begeebees outta me!!! The destruction is simply so much worse in my opinion, than a hurricane. At least with hurricanes, you have a fair amount of warning so you can get outta the way, not so with tornadoes! Hugs for you and your family, Danny and my prayers to those in the paths of the storms..... :(

Time sure has gone by fast. I can't believe it's been 9 years already! I had a very close friend that lived in Moore with her son and daughter when this tornado hit. They had a computer business and lost everything. But, they survived. Thanks for sharing, brought back a lot of memories.

I've been through Hurricanes Andrew in 1992 and Wilma in 2005 and I can tell you it's incredible the amount of devastation that comes from those tornados!! It's so sad and quite a testimonial to the strength and resiliency we humans possess. Great photos Daniel! I'm happy your family survived that turmoil!

Wow, Danny, I am speechless. As sad and terrible event this was, these images are simply awesome. Documentary at it's best.

The "welcome" - a door opening into a whole load of nothing or mess, which either way you want to look at it.

Your dad standing there, observing to see perhaps what is left to rescue.

I'm just so glad they survived this. Your dad's survival instinct must have kicked in when he found shelter in the closet. I can't even imagine what it must feel/sound/look like when your roof takes off.

Is that in fact the insurance rep who's showing up in the reflection? Very cool capture.

The image of the first meeting is haunting. The dark lounge with the direct sunlight coming through the roof.

The last image of your dad is heartbreaking, added by your caption :-(

But - where are the photos of Bill???!!!

wow, it is so amazing, yet devastating what mother nature can do. These images really show the intensity this storm brought. Your parents sound like strong people tho, the last picture really says it all.
