JAZZ LEGEND JOE ZAWINUL DIES AT 75

Keyboardist/composer/bandleader Joe Zawinul, who rose to fame as one of the creators of jazz fusion, died on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, of Merkel cell carcinoma. He was 75. Zawinul had been hospitalized since last month.

Zawinul won widespread acclaim for his keyboard work on chart-topping Miles Davis albums such as In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew, and is credited with bringing the electric piano and synthesizer into the jazz mainstream.

In 1970, Zawinul founded the band Weather Report and produced a series of albums including Heavy Weather, Black Market and I Sing the Body Electric. After Weather Report's breakup, he founded the Zawinul Syndicate in 1987. This past spring, he toured Europe to mark the 20th anniversary of the Zawinul Syndicate.

Zawinul's last album, Brown Street, was released by Heads Up International on February 27, 2007. The two-disc set captured Zawinul, a few of his longtime friends and collaborators, and the 15-piece WDR Big Band in an electrifying live performance. Recorded in October 2005 at Zawinul's own Birdland Club in Vienna, Brown Street showcased Zawinul, Syndicate drummer Nathaniel Townsley, Weather Report and Syndicate bassist Victor Bailey and Weather Report drummer/percussionist Alex Acuna in expanded, orchestral renditions of some of the finest Zawinul compositions from the highly influential Weather Report oeuvre.

"Joe Zawinul was a true jazz pioneer," says Dave Love, President of Heads Up. "He was an artist who was always looking forward. He was respected for his innovative style, and the jazz fusion community will be indebted to him forever for his contributions."

Merkel cell carcinoma, also called neuroendocrine cancer of the skin, is a rare disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found on or just beneath the skin and in hair follicles. Merkel cell carcinoma usually appears as firm, painless, shiny lumps of skin. These lumps or tumors can be red, pink, or blue in color and vary in size from less than a quarter of an inch to more than two inches. Merkel cell carcinoma is usually found on the sun-exposed areas of the head, neck, arms, and legs.

Zawinul's wife, Maxine, had died earlier this year. He is survived by his sons Eric, Ivan and Anthony.

JAZZ KEYBOARD LEGEND DIES AT 75

VIENNA (Reuters) - Keyboardist Joe Zawinul, who played with Miles Davis and helped shape jazz fusion with his band Weather Report, died in his native city of Vienna on Tuesday, aged 75.

Zawinul, voted best keyboarder 30 times by music magazine Down Beat's critics' poll, including this year, had sought medical attention last month after a tour. He died of a rare form of skin cancer, local news agency APA reported.

"Joe Zawinul was born on July 7, 1932 in earth time, and on September 11, 2007 in eternal time. He lives on," APA quoted his son Erich as saying.

Growing up in Vienna's poor Erdberg district during Nazi rule, Zawinul first showed his talent by playing the accordion with his family. He later won a free place in the Vienna Conservatory. As a young man his friends were the late former Austrian President Thomas Klestil and pianist Friedrich Gulda.

In 1959, Zawinul won a piano scholarship at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where many careers in contemporary music began, before joining the bands of U.S. jazz stars Dinah Washington and later Cannonball Adderly.

Miles Davis first approached the budding pianist in New York's Birdland jazz club, wanting to hire him, Zawinul once told an interviewer. Zawinul turned him down but said that when the time was right, they would make history together.

And when the time was right, they did. Ten years later, Zawinul wrote "In a Silent Way," the title cut for Davis' 1969 album regarded as one of the trumpeter's first forays into jazz fusion, a genre drawing on rock, R&B and other styles.

He played on and composed for Davis' "Bitches Brew" album in 1970, a chart-topping record considered revolutionary for the day and marking his crossover to a rock and pop audience.

Zawinul started Weather Report in 1970 with saxophonist Wayne Shorter. The band did much to bring electric piano, synthesizers, and African and Middle Eastern rhythms to mainstream audiences in a jazz setting.

Before its breakup in 1985, Weather Report released 17 albums. Its most famous song, "Birdland," published on the "Heavy Weather" album in 1977, won separate Grammy awards in three decades -- for the original version as well as for covers by Quincy Jones and Manhattan Transfer.

Following the break-up of Weather Report, Zawinul had fronted the Zawinul Syndicate for the past 20 years. After the group's tour this summer, he sought medical attention and was admitted to the Wilhelmina Clinic in his native city last month.

In 1963, Zawinul married Maxine, the first African-American Playboy bunny, whom he met in the Birdland club too. They mainly lived in Malibu, California. The couple had three children.

He also spent a lot of time in Vienna and started his own club there, also called Birdland. He had planned to give a concert in Vienna's concert hall on September 29.

Vienna Mayor Michael Haeupl said the musician would be buried in a grave of honor in Vienna.

The death, evidently, is a very common subject. Asi like also the sadness that produces to us when somebody near one, to who we really considered, goes away to that other "Universo".
During my adolescence and later ..i grew absolutely astonished by the creation of this incredible musician. It is, still, a very sensible part of my life and the one of many others. The internal sensation is the one of to be guided by a new place full of artistic possibilities and intimate enjoyments. In such a way that, without a doubt, I can say that the form leaves from my life and experiences.I know, positively, that many must have lived the same thing ..my idea is not to write a cheap speech but to share next to all those that we enjoyed its music the moment its going..
Joe thanks, friend, by to have given so many good moments to us and for sharing all your universe.
We will see ourselves late.

Joe Zawinul 1932-2007

Life is bearable because there's music. Life is wonderful because somewhere along the line, and by some inexplicable cosmic wonder, we get to live in a world where we can listen to Jane's Addiction, Bach's cello suites, Elizabeth Fraser's voice, Dylan's lyrics and get the Led out. And among these semi-gods that have enhanced our lives throught the years, was Joe Zawinul.

Some years ago I bought something off the rack that I'd never heard. A Weather Report anthology, featuring the Hendrix of bass, Jaco Pastorius (who strangely enough, was beaten to a pulp and fell into a coma 20 years ago to the day, September 11 1987). Weather Report was Zawinul's baby, and without it, there would be no Mars Volta, no Tool, no Flea, no Beastie Boys instrumentals, no countless others. Discovering the magic and inspiration of Weather Report is one of those little things that make life a wee-bit tastier. Of course, the jackpot was listening to Joe Zawinul in Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. I could rant on and on about it, but it would be pointless. Bitches Brew, is.. music in its truest and most powerful state. Free, boundless, brave, smart and visceral all at once.

Life can't be that shitty, when there's music like this.

Night Joe!

Zawinul was a monster but, he had the soul and heart of an oppressed blues singer. He also had an incredible sense of humor. His timing was also something sent down by the gods. His whole sense of musical counterpoint and rhythm made it possible for other players, like Jaco, Alphonso Johnson, Mirslov Vitous, Billy Cobham, Peter Erskine, Airto, (the list goes on) shine even brighter than they would have been able to, if their talents were not showcased by such a consumate artist. Joe knew his shit and was the consumate pro as well. He will be truly missed by this bassist. that's for sure! Peace!

What sad news. His writing of and playing on Cannonball Adderley's 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' is the first instance I know of an electric piano being used so Zawinul pioneered popular use of electronic keyboards being used in recorded music- and look where that led. Amazing music from other planets by a Joe-inspired Miles Davis and Weather Report for a start. Such an inventive mind, such a drop-dead cool dude and such a great and very upsetting loss. Keep his music alive...!

One of our last geniuses passed away. Since September 11 I feel sad and still.
Will there be a new Miles, Joe or Jaco stand up in the years to come?
I don't think so....it's all comes down to money these days....
Maybe this is the end of the great pioneers in music... all that so called new music we here today is allready discovered or written/played by men like Joe.
For me personal... September 11 is another black day in music historie.

American Tango is absolutely my favourite tune this decade. Over 30 years old & still revolutionary.

Total respect to Mr Zawinul and i must say the Wax Poetics issue no.9, which was dedicated to him (while he was still with us), is an absolute must if you want a really thorough & heartwarming story on THE MAN.

For me personally, my recent solo album would not have been the wonderful experience that it was, without this inspiring man influencing my new sound & path... As Joe once said, "I know how to get a sound"... boy, he got that right! :-)

Words can't really do justice to how much i rate JZ... peace & good vibes to his soul & his family
