Current mood:  crushed

It was 20 years ago today that Jaco Pastorius was tragically taken away from us. Even though he only lived 35 years  he still  left us with so many gifts. His music..his playing..they will live on forever. He accomplished the ultimate goal of every musician. He influences, he inspires, and  he has changed peoples lives. For these things he will always be celebrated. But September  21st will always be a sad day for most  people who knew or even  heard of Jaco Pastorius. It is the day we all lost the best bass player that this planet will ever know. More importantly, we lost a son. We lost a brother. We lost a father of four children. We lost a friend....We love you and miss you Jaco!!

jaco changed my entire standard of appreciation for music.

his concept of a bassline (not to mention a melody) slapped me in the face at age 16.

if he were still alive today, i'd love to hear what he had to play.

women and rhythm section first!

I met Jaco only once, in Buffalo. We talked briefly. As I was leaving the club, he shook my hand and said "Adios". I still hear the sound of his voice.

I was shocked when I heard the news of his passing. I stared into space for awhile, but it really hit me about 2 weeks later. I woke up one morning and cried for an hour.

I still miss his sound, there has been no one like him since.

God Bless you Pastorius family.

thank you for sharing your dad, son, husband, and friend with us.

Peace.

Every word above is what I feel and believe too.
Nowadays, we have fast Bass-players with unbelievable skills, but no-one with the expression of Jaco.
It's not about skills or education I believe...it's about personality and vision....
His mind with his hands.....

Jaco Pastorius was the consummate bass player; plenty of imitators and even emulators, but the soul he brought to his music simply cannot be duplicated. He was one of the "rare breed" of musicians; a musical genius. Now there are plenty of excellent musicians, folks, but I'm talking about a MUSICAL GENIUS. That's truly a rarity, but I definitely count Jaco as one. I didn't get this old for nothing; Mint Mama knows what she's talkin' about!!!

Wow, it really does seem like yesterday when I learned of his tragic, unfortunate transition into eternity. But we can take solace in the fact that he left an indellible mark in the music industry, and he'll NEVER be forgotten. An innovator ... Sir Jaco Pastorius!

Thanks Jaco!

My ears are eternally grateful to you
your passage on earth has enriched the life of so many people, not only musicians
your music cover all the emotive spectrum of human beings
from moving the butt to goose bumps and tears
sweet and savage just like Life.

It seems yesterday that I startet playing bass, it seems yesterday that my teacher made me listen to Portrait of Tracy (best song I've ever heard)..I feel kind of sad thinking about the fact that I'll never be able to see him play live....

Do you Know who ?
Could I show you ?
Do you know who Jaco was?
Who was Jaco...

I will always remember the first time I heard his playing, I was so blown away!!!
When I researched further, and found out was a Florida boy, like me, I was even more impressed.
When I found out he was already gone, I felt empty inside, knowing I would never get to experience him live.
Every note I play, everytime I pick up my bass, I try to pay tribute to him in my own little way. His playing was so incredible, and he made it sound so effortless. I am so sorry to his friends and family for the loss that I'm sure is still felt today.
Somehow, I know he is smiling down on us, knowing that he touched and influenced so many people.
Long live his memory, and his music!
