A lot has happened since I last wrote about recording the basics with Shawn Marquis and Joe Kowalski at Hi-n-Dry. April 15th 2007 was the big recording day where over forty Boston area vocalists came together to record the choir parts, the lead vocals, and extra vocal parts. The day started with Roger Miller showing up early to get his guitar solo done before the vocalists were ready to go. Roger shared with me his secret of why his guitar sounds so strange. He tunes the first three strings to the same note. The bottom three strings are also tuned to one note--so the instrument is basically a two-string guitar. I felt there was a good chance he was putting me on until I saw the video of him playing the solo and it was clear that he was barring the first three stings as he swung up and down the neck to play the melody of the National Anthem. By the time Roger was done most of the vocalist had arrived and we started working on the choir parts. It was quite a scene with four video cameras rolling and four photographers clicking away documenting the event. To be continued...
