Who Gives Kudos:

Current mood:  aggravated

We have a problem.  Last night The Times played a show at The Mad Frog here in Cincinnati.  After we finished, we were refused payment for the people who had paid at the door to see us play.  The owner said, "We never give the door to bands.  Only national acts.  You're not a real national act."  That's what he actually said to us.  Not only is this unethical, it's also in violation of both verbal and written agreements that we had with the club for that event.  Over the last ten years I've played venues from San Diego to New York City and I've seen talented young bands consistently lining up to be taken advantage of like this.  It has to stop.  The Mad Frog just had major renovations done (new hardwood floors, HUGE digital flat screen TVs, new paint).  Guess who paid for them?  We did.  And so did the countless other bands who played there night after night, foregoing hundreds of dollars each time they walk out of the club after hearing that they're "not a real national act."  At the end of the night, we DID get our money.  However, we had to firmly but gently remind the owner that it's illegal to breech a contract.  He cursed at us and belittled us in front of customers but we did get paid for the people who came to see us.

Until the Mad Frog changes its policy toward bands, we would ask that you stop patronizing them, and that bands stop playing there.  In fact, we encourage you to give them a call or an e-mail suggesting that they begin to support hard working musicians.  (Mad Frog: 513.784.9119)  We're tired of being the only people in the building at the end of the night who've broken a sweat...and the only people NOT getting paid.

BANDS: stop playing for free.  CLUBS: stop taking advantage of your entertainment.  FANS: know where your cover fee goes.  I guess we know where it goes at the Mad Frog, and we hope they're enjoying the TVs we bought them.

Well, I don't live in Cinn, but consider them boycotted...

hey man they seem like a lot of clubs out there these days, not able to hold up their end of the deal.

I will not be booking there, chances are they do not want me there any way.

but any way man you gotta come to indy!

The Music Mill has it going on, my guess is you could book there easy enough!

Ash,

You should book Jefferson Hall as a regular. Of course that means you'd also have to do a bunch of covers... some Bon Jovi, Segar, and of course Skynard... we are in Southern Ohio / Northern KY.

Can you hear it now?

Ash says into the mic... "Turn it up..." "Sweet Home Alabama...Lord I'm coming home to you..."

Ashy:

Don't be too mad.  You look better when you smile.   But rest assured, no one who reads this will go there.  Justice will come upon that place.

The owner of the Mad Frog did this?  I know this guy.  Are you sure it was him not just some manager?  Ash, let's chat, I would be happy to have a word with him.

A is for Apple

Thank you for posting this blog. I am back in town from Nashville and am getting ready to start playing out here in Cincinnati with A is for Apple. Now that I know how corrupt the Mad Frog is, I will defintately shy away from trying to play there. This story is so true of the music industry. There are always bar owners in college towns that try to take advantage of naive bands. I'm really glad that you guys didnt let them get away with it. Take care guys, Aaron

Welcome back! Contact the Poison Room and the Southgate House. Both great places to play.

Alright now guys, How Long Have you been Playing??? All Due respect Guys, but Who was in charge of the signed contract? That person is responsible for including the "Door" Claus and the "Band Managements Rights" Clause that stipulates any problem with the moneys from the cost of admissions and other paid gratuities toward the band are at the discrtetion of the Bands Manager. THIS IS THE SECOND LINE OF ANY CONTRACT. Granted I appreciate your warning to the rest of our community, but I've NEVER even CARED to trust any Club. The worse time is when You Really want to play somewhere and you just rush in... (am I right on this one???) No club is worth it because not only the obvious reasons but, the word gets around to other clubs and Managements and Your label Fools.
,
PS: Guys, I really like your work...
(It escapes my why someone in your band would sell a K0rg A-2)
