more kind words for jonas reinhardt

Miscmission’s Blog
Seeing Jonas Reinhardt
at Million Fishes on Saturday was one of those rare concert moments
that I only experience every so often. I felt something similar when I
saw Arcade Fire and Daft Punk, but it’s different when you see a local
band - almost cathartic and really gets you enthusiastic about music. I
think it will be a memorable notch on the Mission music timeline, which
doesn’t exist, but should.

PS. I didn’t see Arcade fire and Daft Punk in the mission, just in
case you were wondering. But if they did play in the mission, they’d
probably have to play in some High School Gym. What’s the largest venue
in the mission ?

1.jpgOh man. Oh man oh man oh man. Jonas Reinhardt. Where to start with
these guys? I first saw them play at the Knockout
back in August and I was so blown away by them that the appropriate
words to adequately express their greatness escape me. Any band that
uses a random person's name as their band name is already great in my
book, but having the drummer sit up front as the focal point while
playing the most sublimely hypnotic music helps a great deal as well.

Thus, when I saw that they were playing at Million Fishes gallery, I
had to go and see them again. Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man. They were
fucking fantastic! This band melds the kraut-rock stylings of Kraftwerk
with the groove sensibility of Liquid Liquid, leaving you dancing and
mesmerized all at once. Whenever I hear this band I feel like I should
be on a tram or in the back of a taxi being led through Eastern
European cities.

This band is emotionally cohesive and intellectual, while leaving the
listener feeling like a passenger in such a desirable way. This band is
exotic metropolitanism at it's finest, and you have to have to have to
have to make sure to see them next time they play live. While I really
enjoy their record, for me it takes seeing them live to fully
appreciate what they offer. That these guys were a 2008 SF Bay Guardian Goldie winner makes complete & total sense.

Sorry the pic is blurry - that's what happens when you forget your real
camera at home and are at the mercy of a cell phone camera.
