As we were driving home from our wedding, we saw several cars pulled off on the side of the road, with their lights and blinkers on. As we drove by, we asked what happened. A woman pointed to a small dog sitting on the road and said a car in front of her had just hit the dog and didn't stop. Along with a few other people, she was trying to get the dog off the road. Being animal lovers, we of course pulled over. Matt jumped out and grabbed a blanket (a new one, which we had just been given) and went to go help. The dog was growling and would not let anyone close to it. Matt used calming signals on the dog, then scooped him up in the blanket. The dog was obviously injured and didn't appear to be doing very well. He didn't have any tags on, but he looked well cared for-well fed and he had a summer hair cut. One of the bystanders called her vet to see about bringing the dog in. The vet said that someone would have to agree to pay for the treatment before they would see the dog. When the woman told the assembled crowd that, everyone took 2 steps back. Except my baby. He looked around and when he saw that no one else was willing to chip in, he said he would pay for it. There was no way he was going to let that little dog suffer because no one would pay to take care of him. Because we already had our 3 dogs with us and weren't familiar with where this vet was, we followed the woman to the vet and dropped the dog off, while Matt dropped off his credit card number and we all went home for the night, knowing that we had done all we could for this little dog.
The next day (Sunday), we called the vet. The dog had survived the night and x-rays showed a broken leg and a broken pelvis and they were trying to keep him comfortable.
On Monday, I called the vet again to check on the dog and received wonderful news-the dog's owner had found him at that vet's and was meeting with the vet at that very moment to discuss treatment options!!! I almost cried I was so happy that the little dog had been reunited with his owner.
