Huntsville Bicycle Polo

Huntsville, Alabama we play two different styles...trying to work out a schedule to alternate between the two. At night, we play in parking lots with golfclub/PVC mallets and a whiffle ball. During the day, we play on grass with cane mallets and 1 soccer balls. I like the grass version better personally - its fast, people dont give a shit, and it always seems to get out of control.

Dallas Texas:
Roller hockey court, size one soccer ball.

We played on grass once, and had a lot of fun, so now we're discussing playing two games a week; one hard court, one grass.

Chicago: Tennis court, street hockey ball, ski pole/abs pipe mallets. Grass, micro soccer ball, wooden mallets.
Starting next week, we're sending a team out every other weekend to regional games to play their way, and show off ours. Dayton OH, St Louis MO, Lafayette IN, Columbus OH, are we missing any mid-westers?

STL Bike Polo

In the STL we play hardcourt in a street hockey rink. We use a size 1 soccer ball, but are considering using a hockey ball. Mallets, thus far have been made of croquet mallet heads and broom sticks. We are currently trying to construct new mallets. It is a also rumored that there is a rogue bike polo team here that plays on grass, but I haven't seen them yet.

Bozeman Bike Polo

Bozeman, Montana. Hard Court, currently in a crappy basketball court, starting to use street hockey ball after using field hockey ball. Had 25 playing, scene calmed down after getting kicked out of our lovely shithole of a parking garage. Considering adding grass play too.

That sucks Bozeman, I sure hope we dont get kicked out of our parking garage, most of the cops we have met are cool with it, but every few months we run into one that "will look into it". Been playing up there for about 8 months.

We've had plenty of cops drive by without stopping, knowing that we'd been keeping the real derelicts out. This guy seemed new and intent on 'upholding the law'.
Now we have too much snow to play anyway.

Size 0 soccer ball, mostly on caged hardcourt 4 tennis court widths long, sometimes on grass, always 3 on 3.

As soon as we get around to building some perpendicular mallets we'll start playing street hockey ball styles, at least part-time.

Philadelphia:
When we started in 02 or 03 it was wooden mallets and some kind of small ball on hardcourt.
At some point we switched to hockey balls. We use a red one most of the time, and a softer pink one when it gets colder out. We also switched to ski poles and PVC type tubing for mallets after meeting the Ottawans for the first time.

The General Stuff:

~How We Play: We play rough. Physical contact is perfectly okay, especially if we've played together before and you know what to expect.

~Where We Play: Tennis courts, playgrounds, and parking lots/garages are our playing fields (No grass games except when out of town...depending where we are). These venues tend to lend natural boundries as well, so we have no specified length or width of polo court.

~Goal: We mark our goals with orange traffic cones spaced one bike length wide and one bike length from the end of the court (average adult bike).

~Teams: Three person teams - positions are fluid (no designated goalie).

~Start Game: Place the ball in center court and have someone on the sideline count off "1-2-3-Go!"

~After a Goal is Scored: After a goal is scored, the scoring team must return to their side of the court and wait for the scored upon team to drive on them before they may go for the ball again. The scored upon team may make use of this time to rush the opposing goal.

~Points/Winning: The first team to score five points wins, no time limit. In tournament play we will set a 10/15 minute time limit to games, at the end of which the team with the most points wins.

~Bikes: Whatever you like, just be prepared to beat the crap/have the crap beaten out of it (wheels in particular). A low gear ratio tends to work out the best for control, sprint, and speed/direction change. I like my frame a little small too for maneuverability.

~Mallets: Any style, just not with a head made from metal that could potentially kill or core sample someone.

~Ball: Street Hockey ball.

We play with:

hard court bike polo
street hockey 'no bounce' balls
Mallets made from ABS and ski poles
Usually on park an empty parking lot at the local college. Long curbed parking lot.

We have about 15 players and play every Thursday evening and an occasional Sunday afternoon.

We're always trying to find new players... it's slowly growing.
