In conjunction with the release of Coco Solid’s brand-spanking new album, "The Radical Bad Attack", the first MySpace Secret Show in Wellington saw Coco and her posse perform live at The Mighty Mighty Bar for the first time in over a year.
Excellent Dj’s started off the night, GFab and “the original Malaysian gangster” DJ Han Baby, getting the crowd in the mood for a party, packing the dance floor in anticipation.
Starting with "Electrik Love", the first single off the dynamic new album, Coco Solid was on form, she’s one pretty lady with killer raps and phat beats. With her “partner in rhyme”, the ever-suave Erik Ultimate at her side, and Han Baby spinning the decks, the night kicked off in style.
Following this, a couple of my 2006 anthems, "Crimefighters" and "Qriminaal", provoking fond memories of crumping in friends’ kitchens making curry and vegan cookies.
The crowd were well warmed up by this point. Many a booty was shakin’ and the roof was raised.
From there Coco and Erik launched new tracks focusing on the first side of the new album, (SEX), which definitely dedicated to the dance floor.
"Party Underground", "Black Zen" and slower number "Superdeep" show off the trademark monotone wit that Coco Solid fans are addicted to.
And just in case you hadn’t yet realised, Coco reminded the crowd that she’s badder and radder than ever! "Come Round My Way", track 8 on "The Radical Bad Attack", was a highlight, a classy lament for an expired relationship.
After a quick throw back to the early days, with "Rap'n'Roll", the gang at Mighty Mighty went wild for a certain barkeeper, who joined the crew onstage for a super smooth guest spot on "Disco Light".
The set ended with the very gangsta "Graffiti Girls for Life", the first track off "The Radical Bad Attack".
With a great mix of new and old tracks and the support of her super-rad crew, Coco Solid put on an impressive show.
It was a perfect opportunity to party hard mid-week, and it seems everyone agreed, the place was packed! Go Coco!
Thanks to Myspace for finally putting on a show in Wellington! Hope there are more Myspace Secret shows happening in the city soon!
