There is no denying Fur Patrol are a band firmly held in high and tender esteem for many New Zealanders and so it came as no surprise when a queue of fans weaved its way around the Dux de Lux waiting to see the band perform for free at MySpace’s first Secret Show in Christchurch. One girl told us she had just flown in from Dubai and would not miss the opportunity to see their MySpace Secret Show for the world.
The show was a complete sell out, the venue reached capacity forcing us to regrettably turn away some fans. The crowd was a mix of young and old reflecting the bands 12 year presence in the hearts of New Zealand music fans, and proving that they are a band who transcends trends.
Support came from local band Tiny Paper Daggers, who were chosen by Fur Patrol when the band checked out their MySpace page, and with a brilliant live set they are definitely a band worth keeping an eye on.
Fur Patrol took the stage playing songs mainly off their freshly released third album Local Kid including recent singles Hidden Agenda and Great Leap Forward. It was the first time many fans had seen the band pared down to a three piece, and they proved beyond a doubt that they are still one of New Zealand’s best live bands.
Fur Patrol put on an outstanding show for all, their live set has certainly lost none of its intensity, Julia Deans vocals never fail to get trapped inside your head, and the new songs show that the band continue to grow as song writers.
After an amazing encore fans started lining up at the foot of the stage to get the band to sign their limited edition Fur Patrol posters, in fact it would be much more apt to call what we witnessed as a signing frenzy.
These fans were some of the most passionate we have ever seen at a MySpace Secret Show!
