What better way to celebrate the Christmas holidays than with an all ages party in a long forgotten Scout Hall on the edge of Auckland city? That is what we decided to do with New Zealand indie stars Die! Die! Die! In a scene not dissimilar to a Famous Five novel, fans turned up to the St Barnabas Scout Hall perched below Mt Eden and found themselves side by side with local orienteering enthusiasts and Girl Guides who were taking advantage of the summer hours.
We even spotted Santa Claus taking a stroll (check out the video if you do not believe us!)
First up were the esoteric sounding An Emerald City (www. myspace. com/anemeraldcity) who wooed the audience with their eastern blend of music and diverse instruments such as the sita and a violin. They certainly won a lot of new fans.
Following on from this Myspacers were treated to a song from Muso Challenge (insert link www. myspace. com/musochallenge) winner Jamie Gray www. myspace. com/jamiegraymusic before Die! Die! Die! hit the stage with their anarchic stage show. A Die! Die! Die! show is not for the faint hearted and this show was another reminder of why they have the reputation as one of New Zealand’s fierce live acts. The band played to a packed hall of avid fans with crowd favourites such as ‘Sideways here we come’ and their upcoming single ‘People Talk off their 2007 album Promises Promises sending the crowd into overdrive, before leaving the stage before the crowd begged them back for an encore. MySpace merchandise, screen printed posters commemorating the event and cans of V were given out for free to the crowd and both band and fans agreed that there was no better way to celebrate the summer holidays than by putting on a free show for everyone.
Thank you to Die! Die! Die!, An Emerald City, Jamie Gray, VISA Entertainment, John Baker for production, James Brown for videography, Joanna Alpe for photography, and Matty Warmington for editing. Last but not least thank you to the fans for making it another memorable MySpace Secret Show.
