Lower Hutt is 658km from South Auckland and 10,786km from South Central LA, but tonight Myspace Secret Shows brought a little bit of both to the Hutt Valley with a massive all ages gig featuring New Zealand's very own top selling global hip hop artist
Savage, and fellow Decepticonz MC,
Devolo.
Lower Hutt youth centre Secret Level was the secret venue, and kids from around the valley lined up for hours for a chance to see the former South Auckland pair.
Supporting them was Wellington beats combo,
Beatrootz who warmed the crowd up with their soulful harmonies and beats.
Devolo's set, including tracks from his debut solo album, 'Heaven and Hell', threw down some wicked beats and got the crowd up to fever pitch for Savage’s entrance onto the stage. There was excitement in the air as fans anticipated Savage’s arrival and it was well worth the wait. Playing songs off his chart topping album ‘Savage Island’ he treated fans to a blistering set of tracks.
There was no doubt that the real crowd pleaser was his raucous rendition of his mammoth hit 'Swing' which the star stopped singing half way through to invite 'the smallest kids in the audience' up on stage with him to finish the song off. It was the most intimate of shows and for all a dream come true to be this close to Savage. Just when fans thought it was over there was more, Savage invited Devolo and Beatrootz to get back on stage for one more song. Fans hung around afterwards waiting for their posters to be signed and chat which Savage and Devolo were who more than happy to accommodate.
How many shows like that is the Hutt likely to see? Not many, if any...
But for these lucky Hutt Hip-hop fans, tonight is more than enough.
Thank you to Savage, Devolo, Beatrooz, Paul, Andy and Brotha D at Dawn Raid,
Secret Level, and photographer Dionne Ward and the fans!
