On the eve of NZ Music Month Boh Runga marked the arrival of her first album as a solo artist with an intimate show for her MySpace friends. The show was an opportunity for fans to hear the new songs for the first time with her band in a live and intimate setting, Bacco in Auckland city.
Well known from her days as the fiery lead singer and guitarist in successful New Zealand band Stellar* which she fronted for over a decade, the departure from fronting a rock band to solo artist seems a natural progression. In fact it is in these solo songs she played for the crowd which form the basis of her album ‘Right Here’, that we see the strength of her song writing shine through. It is apparent that the last six months of recording in a Hollywood studio have paid off with finely crafted songs, the most popular of these ‘Evelyn’ which the crowd sing along to. It was a very special evening and Boh was more than happy to sign posters at the end of the show and chat to fans. As she later wrote on her MySpace blog ‘thank you everyone that came to the MySpace Secret Show. Was so nice to see some MySpace friends in the flesh!’. With a loyal following and a handbook of finely crafted songs, the world is Boh’s oyster.
Thanks to Boh Runga and band, Paul Mckessar and all at CRS Management, Universal Music, Glen and John at Bacco, Joanna Alpe for photography, James Brown for filming, Matty Warmington for editing, and all the fans who made it such a special night!
