Craig "BBC" Long is going old-school for the New Year. The Bench, his monthly showcase of local hip-hop talent, used to include a chance for aspiring MCs to show their talent in three minutes or less during a segment called Respect the Mic. The name came about after the first few installments of the show, when Long "cut so many people off if they went too long and pissed a lot of cats off," he says. "I started saying 'Respect the mic or you can't recite' and thus came 'Respect the Mic.'"

The segment hasn't been featured at the showcase recently, but Long is bringing it back today at Warehouse Live, The Bench's home for the last six months. He says anyone is welcome to sign up, just remember to keep it short and impressive. "Don't tell me your life story, how many hoes you got, how long you been in jail," he says. "Just bless us lyrically and pass the mic on." The Bench starts off with a performance by D. Rose and DJ Cozmos.
