Hello everyone,

Time for September updates and news from the University of Oregon! This newsletter will provide you with reminders and information, but remember—you always can call us toll-free at 1 (800) BE-A-DUCK (232-3825). And don’t forget to become a fan on our Facebook fan page. Just search for "University of Oregon Admissions."

College Application Time

There’s no reason to wait to apply for fall 2010 admission to the University of Oregon! The online application is live on our website at http://bit.ly/applyUO and ready for traffic. The UO also wants to make sure you have the right tools to determine if being a Duck is right for you, from the list of all majors and minors offered by the UO to online information on diversity and student life. Early fall also is a great time to schedule a visit to explore the UO’s beautiful campus in Eugene. Come watch the leaves change with us!

Duck Preview: Spend a Day with the Ducks

Narrowing down which college is right for you isn’t simple, is it? You’re probably being bombarded with advice from your guidance counselor and with fliers and e-mails like this one. Ever wish you could spend some time on the UO campus to cut through the clutter? Your wish is our command. On Saturday, October 24, the UO would love to host you for Duck Preview, a free campus visit event designed to answer all your questions about UO academics, housing, financial aid, and student life. Take a tour of campus and meet faculty members from many of the UO’s 270 comprehensive academic programs. Think you’re ready to join our Quack Pack? Now’s your chance to find out! Check the Duck Preview website at http://admissions.uoregon.edu/visit/dprev.htm for online registration for the event.

Portland Planning

The UO Office of Admissions now offers counseling appointments and information sessions for students living in or visiting the Portland area. The convenient downtown location in the historic White Stag Block allows students to connect with an admissions counselor right away. It’s a first step toward learning about the UO’s academic excellence in more than 270 academic programs. Check http://admissions.uoregon.edu/visit/index.htm#PDX for more information.

To be, or not to be?

Is that your question? If ‘tis nobler in your mind to become a master thespian, set construction carpenter, lighting technician, or designer of dazzling costumes, the UO’s newly remodeled Miller Theatre Complex can help make your dreams of stardom come true. The recently completed expansion added the black-box arena-style Hope Theatre, as well as a new costume shop with fitting room, dye room, and green room to the existing Robinson Theatre—a total of 18,000 square feet of upgraded facilities. Whether you intend to major in theater or you just want to dabble, the artistic and cultural benefits of theatrical training last a lifetime—long enough, perhaps, to win one of those little golden statuettes! Check http://admissions.uoregon.edu/majors/theater for more information.

Resources for Parents: Applications 101

It’s never easy when ducklings leave the nest. As your student prepares to head to college, you may be wondering how best to stay involved without becoming one of those “helicopter parents.” (You know, the kind that are always hovering.) Our advice? Help your student set up electronic reminders for all application deadline dates, and then let them proceed on their own with this important step toward independence. If you’re feeling anxious about the college transition, read a message from UO President Richard Lariviere offering his insight into UO culture. Check out the UO Parent and Family Association for ways to stay informed about student and family activities, and peruse our online guide for parents, which offers tips on letting your young adult become self-sufficient as part of the college experience. But most of all, take a deep breath! Check http://admissions.uoregon.edu/parents for more information.
