"Crowd Encouraged to Spit At Bouncers"
From UCD college Tribune 03.11.03

Student Bar policy on visitors is under review following incident
IY PETER MOYNIHAN
THE BANDS AGAINST BUSH event held on Wednesday 29th of October was interrupted when one of the bands was removed from the stage for verbally abusing the bar staff.
The band Lynched were apparently
reacting to the confiscation of cans by
members of staff, and while on stage
told the crowd to "spit in the face" of
anyone who asked if they had cans.
I,,. The group subsequently incited the
crowd to chant "fat cunt" at the bouncer
and at this juncture their performance
was interrupted and they were removed
from the premises. It has also been
confirmed that Lynched were not a part
of ,re origina! line-up and were booked
on a last minute basis.    )
The event was organised primarily by Erin Thomas and James Redmond and (SVbooked through the Students Union
Ents Office. The primary aim was to raise money to send a delegation to the
European Social forum and 430 was
praised for this purpose.
Thomas and Redmond are of the opinion that despite the Unfortunate incident midway through the event itself had been a success. Speaking to the
COollrib une, Redmond said it is "ridiculous to expect us {the organisers] to be able to pre-empt the actions of other individuals".
Whtn asked if the incident had occurred due to a lack of security Redmond stated his opinion that the presence of security had in fact provoked it. According to Redmond, "People were drinking cans quite sedately, not buying overpriced pints and weren't bothering anyone." Thomas also accused the bouncers of being "a bit heavy handed" when removing Lynched from the stage.
Lynched did not make themselves available for interview, but issued a statement to the College Tribune, defending; their actions- in their statement ,they claimed to have had "sound reasoning" behind their outburst.
The group went on to describe this confiscation of cans as "shameless".' They also described their incitement of the crowd towards abuse aimed at the staff was ""tongue in cheek". They, described the actions of the bouncers in confiscating cans as a "loss of basic but the band did, however, apologise to the event organisers for putting them in a
position whereby they were forced to apologise on the band's behalf, but reiterated that they "stand firm" by their actions.
When approached. Student Club Manager Declan Hyland expressed his dissatisfaction with the incident and the organisation of the event. "Because this was a charity event the usual rent was ' waived and we allowed a number of , non- U.G.O students to attend." Hyland also stated his opinion that the trouble ' came from a group of approximately six  people who were not students of the college and told the College Tribune that for this reason the policy on guests for such event may have to be reviewed
Ents Officer: Oaviei Sherry, who    "
booked the event, said that it was an
unforeseen difficulty but that the
organisers had taken a limited
responsibility and expressed regret on
the night.
He also congratulated the staff and
those running the event on how quickly
they managed to restore order and
reiterated the opinion that overall, the
night had been successful.    ;
After leaving; the   bar,   Lynched i' continued their performance outside until they were asked to leave.
