Hey all--got a brand new show I want to tell you about. Myself, Rich Pagano (drums/vox) and John Conte (bass/vox) will be performing an entire night of music dedicated to Early Elton John Trio Tours of '70-'72.
'70-72?...Trio?...A bit specific, Mr Jeff? Absolutely. One of my favorite records of all time is Elton's "11.17.70"--a Live New York City recording of Elton, bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson. An incredible audio snapshot of a hungry, adventurous and immensely talented trio of musicians re-inventing --for the Live setting--Elton's masterful material. A huge record for me and my own mates.
Last year, I, with Rich and John, performed EJ's "Take Me To The Pilot" at my own kazeedigs show "Greats Of The 88's"-- featuring the music of my favorite pianist/vocalists. A few weeks after the show, the boys and I agreed that we needed to get together and play more of that music--and vibe--that we loved so much..just for fun. Well, over a year later, we have a full night of music that we want to share with you.
In case you are not a regular reader of my missives..Rich Pagano is a singin' drummer and producer that has played/produced with Willie Nile, Rosanne Cash, Ian Hunter and happens to be in The Fab Faux. Go here for more Rich Pagano.
John Conte is a bassist and (all too rare) vocalist that I share the Asbury Jukes stage with nightly. Peter Wolf (J. Geils), Joan Osborne and Phil Ramone are a few of his credits. He is also in a great band with his New York Doll brother, Steve Conte, called...The Contes. For all things John Conte, go here.
"Burn Down The Mission", "Border Song", "Levon", "Country Comfort"--just a few of our handpicked selections.
No Donald Duck suits, funny glasses. No Crocodile Rock, Mozart Wigs..and no imitations--we are singing with our real voices. Just us, the spirit of a young Elton, Dee and Nigel, once again in NYC--ripping it up with a piano, bass and drums, trying to do the music justice.
hope you can make it, jk

Early Elton
A Tribute to the Elton John, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson
trio tours of 1970 - 1972
featuring:
Jeff Kazee - piano, vocals
Rich Pagano - drums, vocals
John Conte - bass, vocals
As the story goes, Elton's label didn't have the funds to send him out to tour the US with a full band, yet Elton need to promote his imminent releases. Having decided on Dee and Nigel, Elton then rearranged the songs and vocals to fit within the limitations of his new lineup. Suddenly, a new sound emerged that was both raw and poignant.
While Jeff, John and Rich have used rare video, bootleg recordings and even Elton's own home demos in shaping their collective vision of Elton's Trio Period, they will be blurring the lines between replication and innovation slightly, while still capturing and utilizing the spirit, mood and energy from those early tours.
