You know how to polka, but you've never tried it sober.

You know what knee-high by the Fourth of July means.

It is traditional for the bride and groom to go bar hopping between the ceremony and the reception.

You were delighted to get a miniature snow shovel for your 3rd birthday.

You can recognize someone from Iowa by their driving.
You buy Christmas presents at Fleet Farm.

You spent more on beer than you did on food at your wedding.

When you hear someone use the word "Uffda," you do not immediately break into uncontrollable laughter.

You think fast food is hitting a deer at 65 mph.

You or someone you know was a "Dairy Princess" at a county fair.

You let your older siblings talk you into putting your tongue on a steel post in the middle of winter.

You think Lutheran and Catholic are THE major religions.

Football, Deer Hunting & Opening Fishing schedules are checked before wedding dates are set.

Saturday you go the local bowling ally.

You have driven your car on a lake.

You can make sense out of the words "upnort" and "batree.

Vacation always meant "going up North."

At every wedding you have been to you have had to dance the hokey poky and the chicken dance.

Your definition of a small town is one that only has one bar.

The local gas station sells live bait.

At least twice a year, the kitchen doubles as a meat processing plant.

Your mom asks, "Were you born in a barn?" and you know exactly what she means.

You think that the start of deer season is a national holiday.

Pop is not only what you call your dad, but is the ONLY name for soda.

I love you!!  You are my "Minnesota Gem!!"

OK... I have a few more to add:

You know you are from Minnesota when;

You won't get the mail after it snows UNLESS you shovel out your mailbox!

You go to another state and try and drink the water from the tap, and are super surprised the water taste like swamp water or chlorine!

When you tell people you are from Minnesota and they say BRRR!!!  "No... we are fortunate to have FOUR seasons silly!"

You tell people you are from Minnesota and they mock you in a Fargo accent "oh! Minnie- soooo-tah??"  You can look at them like they are really stupid. Because guess what??

You know you are from Minnesota when the tempature can fluctuate 50 degrees in 24 hours (or less)

Yep, Wisconsin isn't all that different (except we more often are recognizing/critiquing Illinois drivers rather than Iowans). Damn FIBS. You have to be from the midwest to "get" that one too.

I love Knee High By the 4th of July. My mom's saying is "3 Snows on a Robin's Tail" meaning once we see robins in spring, it will snow three more times before the weather becomes nice for good.

I got such a good laugh reading this, better than I've had in a long time because it brings back my childhood. A lot of that applies to displaced Minnesotens from Detroit too. My grandmother used to say 'Uffda!' all the time. When the family moved from Detroit to So California I'd get strange looks from the other kids whenever I mentioned pop. There's so many more ... but no Norwegian Bachelor Farmer jokes? No mention of the Lolapalooza ice cream dish at Bridgman's?

What I thought was funny when I was little was that the first 'movie star' I ever saw wasn't here in the LA area but on a trip back to visit relatives in Minneapolis where we went to the Ice Carnival parade and saw Gig Young!

Did you ever have Cardoman Rolls? I had them for the first time in Minn when my two aunts made them for us. I've been hooked on them ever since. Its a family tradition for my mom to make everyone a batch for Xmas day.

Thanks for the laughs.

Sincerely,
Robert Jensen
