Who Gives Kudos:

Sunday, February 25, 2007
1. Hopefully readers will have taken the two minutes to check out your trailer, but just in case, please explain the premise behind "TANK".

Sex, Drugs and Violence.

2. What inspired you to join this team for the SXSW Grindhouse Trailer Challenge?

I really like the lead producer and director, they are hard working, dedicated, and inspiring.  I worked with Robert Stewart(a lot), Christian Cisneros, Jason Harper, Dave, Maurice and the other crew and cast several times and enjoy the synergy.  (They are ALL NUTS) Not to mention to have a chance to be sandwiched between Robert R. and Quinten T. - who wouldn't want that?

3. What was the creative team like? Who wrote it, directed it, and who all contributed the crazy stylistic atmosphere?

Jason Harper wrote it, Christian directed, and Robert produced it.  Robert has an innate ability to get people to do things for him, so we were able to secure an abandoned neighborhood in Williamson County and the Low Water Crossing by the dam.  Great locations!  Christian's got great vision and Jason is a great actor.  Robert, Christian, Dave and Jason worked together previously and brought this all together beautifully.  Dave Winfrey always adds fantastic set designing!

4. How much time did the production spend shooting, editing, and doing visual effects and sound/music?

Less than a week.

5. How much of the film was shot on sets or secured locations with experienced actors, and how much was shot more in guerilla style with stolen locations and friends filling out the cast?

Robert was fortunate to secure locations quickly so that we didn't have to do the guerilla style.  We had a great set of actors, and crew who love working together and work hard.

6. What was the biggest challenge in creating the trailer?

Trying to get Maurice to wear girl jeans!  Didn't work.

7. What's the craziest thing that happened while shooting?

I think the funniest thing was that the motorcycle in the beginning was not working and they had to keep rolling it up the hill.

8. Were there any major setbacks?

Not getting the quarry location.

9. What was your production crew made up of?

Awesome individuals.

10. What hardware and software did you edit with?

I dunno, ask Christian.

11. What was the budget?

I dunno, to almost buy enough pizza for the cast and crew.

12. Did story boards play a part in your film? What sort of pre-planning went into it?

I didn't see any story boards.

Several preproduction meetings, even though this came together fairly quick, it did indeed have a lot of time dedicated to preproduction.

13. Who did the narration?

I thought it was Isaac Hayes - It wasn't?

14. How did you get the music?

Awsome Aaron Horne.

15. How much footage would you say hit the cutting room floor?

Probably a bunch.  With as much great shooting that was done, I am sure Chris is saving it for a great short!

16. Have you considered making a feature version? Would you be involved?

If you got the money, honey – We got the time.

17. Would you say you achieved your vision with the final product of the trailer? If we made a feature version, what would you change?

If I could change anything on a feature version it would be the weather - Not so FREEZING!

18. How long have you been doing this? Have you made other short films? Have you ever made a feature length film?

I have been working on and  producing shorts (with Robert S.) and working in the film industry for the past 20 years.  We have worked on several feature length films and TV series (Ya'll remember the Outsiders tv series - ya, well that was me bowling! - ha)   Really, we have produced and worked on short films and music since the late 80's.

19. What sort of training and experience do you have working with film/video?

I grew up in Southern CA next to an actor, what other experience do I need?  I got to go on set with him growing up and meet the likes of Leslie Ann Warren and was priviledged to meet Jimmy Stewart (memory I will never forget).  I also interned at the The Walt Disney Studios during college and worked at Sony Pictures Inc. in film distribution.

20. What were the top 5 movies that inspired the trailer and you?

Ask Christian.

Zombie movies and sarcastic comedies inspire me.

21. Who are your hero filmmakers? Or heroes in general?

1.Robert Stewart
2. Christian Cisneros

My heros are all the armed forces and those who have overcome adversity and difficult situations.

22. What does the word "Grindhouse" mean to you?

Down and Dirty

23. What's your favorite exploitation genre?

ZOMBIES!!!!

24. Did you ever read Rebel Without a Crew? What part has Robert Rodriguez played in your journey into making movies?

No, I didn't read it.   RR has proved that a person could make a successful independent movie on an extremely low budget.

25. Favorite RR movie? Favorite QT movie?

I like Sin City, Pulp fiction

27. Not to support the current trend of unimaginative re-makes, but just for the sake of nostalgia: if you could re-make one movie, what would it be?

Johnny Dangerously

28. If you could make a movie based on a comic book, what would it be?

Casper

29. What novel?

The Lizard Diaries

30. What old cartoon?

Old Warner Bros. Propoganda cartoons

31. What video game?

Adventures with Dora the Explorer

32. And finally, if you could make a movie exploiting a band "The Monkeys" style, featuring band members getting wound up in a bunch of wild shenanigans set to their own music, which band would it be?

Quiet Riot!

33. OK back to the nitty gritty. What's next for you?

Making Chocolate Chips Cookies

34. Further down the road, what's your dream project for the future? What's the epic movie they'll chisel on your tomb stone?

Robert Stewart's Moon Over Bourbon Street.

35. What was your overall thoughts on your production?

I did the costume on this movie.  It was a lot of fun and opportunity to use fun 70's style and go a little overboard on all the unique characters.  A little stressful to get this together in a week, but it is always rewarding to see the final product.

36. What do you have to say to all those kids out there who want to make movies, but have absolutely no idea how to get started or if it's even possible to do it without some sort of magical Hollywood "greenlight"?

Invest in lots of Ramen Noodles.  Or, find a Sugar Daddy or Momma! If you do get on a set, my advice to PA's; be pro-active and work, work, work.

37. Anything else to add?

Flamingos
