Last night's press opening of L'Histoire du Soldat and Renard at Oakland Opera Theater was highly entertaining.... Kirya Traber displayed her acting talents as the Narrator, speaking the words of many of the characters.

The Oakland Opera delighted listeners Saturday with a double bill of Stravinsky's theatrical works, Histoire du Soldat (1918) and Renard (1916).... The three principals — Ben Jones as Joe the soldier, Matthias Bossi as the devil, and, most notably, local spoken-word artist Kirya Traber as the narrator — were all excellent.

The stellar cast includes Ben Jones as Soldier in L'Histoire and the Tenor I in Renard, Darron Flagg as Tenor II in Renard, David Hunt as the General in L'Histoire and the Rooster in Renard, as well as Baritone Igor Vieira and Bass Richard Mix in Renard and Matthias Bossi as the Devil in L'Histoire. Narrator Kirya Traber does an excellent job keeping the pace moving in L'Histoire as she assumes a variety of characters and moods, fitting in perfectly with the musical ensemble.

In this appropriate resetting of the work to the current Iraqi war, Histoire solidly joins the ranks of older stage pieces whose scenarios cannot be left alone. Winning interpretations by all-american Soldier Ben Jones, merchant-cum-Devil Mathias Bossi... and soldier-girl Narrator Kirya Traber brought the witty ... libretto to life.
