Warning: Spoiler ahead if you haven't read Harry Potter Book 6 yet.....

(Edit: Thanks to Aaron for suggesting adding a spoiler warning)

Just a quick blog to say I am really starting to get excited about the forthcoming release of Harry Potter 7 - The Deathly Hallows. It's due out in Hardback on July 21st, and I've already got my pre-order in at Amazon. Probably going to get another one as well, to avoid squabbles in our house. This has got to be one of the most anticipated books ever, and is bound to break records for quickest/biggest sales... Just how is JK Rowling going to wrap things up? Is Harry going to defeat Voldemort, will he die in the process? Will Ron and Hermione get together? Is Dumbledore really dead and is Snape really a servant of the Dark Lord? Oooohhhh

I've been reading HP5 - The Order of the Phoenix - and will be reading book 6, The Half-Blood Prince next, in order to remind myself of things before the big launch.

Interestingly, Warner Bos are releasing the film version of the Order of the Phoenix a week earlier - July 13th. See a trailer here and read lots of details re cast members etc here.

A few of my predictions for HP7 - just my own ravings, you understand, I'm not plagiarising anyone else's theories:

* It's going to get messy.

* Harry will defeat Voldemort but will have to relinquish his magical powers in the process

* Hermione will die

* Dumbledore will not come back. This, after all, Harry's battle.

* Snape will turn out to be on the goodies' side after all - there was some reason as yet unknown why he 'turned bad' at the end of book 6

* We will encounter Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth ( allegedly the bartender at the Hog's Head in Hogsmead), and he will have a significant role to play.

* Harry's scar itself is one of Voldemort's Horcruxes - in which case, maybe Harry does die, in order to take himself out and save the world.....

Anyway, time will tell.... All credit to Madame Rowling for delivering us so painstakingly to this denouement. 3 cheers!

And speaking of denouements, you could do worse than take the time to download and listen to Mike Bennett's One Among the Sleepless- he's connected as one of my MySpace friends. It's a podcast novel written and performed by Mike. It's very good, extremely funny (Mike's vocal characterizations on the podcast are amazing), pretty saucy, and rather suspenseful... We're currently 25 episodes in and there are 8 weeks to go. Once again, it is fascinating to see how the various strands of the story will come together. I should add 'people who can create credible plots' to my list of heroes, because it's a talent I've certainly never been able to master!

You've got it all wrong, babe.

HP isn;t much different from any formula story.  The formula in this case being the "Rite of Passage" sequence.  A famous example of this was Luke Skywalker's progession through the Starwars Saga.

Let's just amke some comparisons.  Luke = Harry  Voldemort = Vader Obi Wan = Dumbledore.  With me so far?  Okay.

1 - Dumbledore HAD to die.  Just as Obi Wan had to die.  The hero can't grow unless the old Master can step down to leave shoes to be filled.
2 - Just as with Luke and Vader, the end of the story will NOT be that Harry kills Voldemort.  Harry must choose not to kill at the end.  Or the redemption will not work.
3 - Okay.   This is where you have to trust me.  Snape kills Voldemort.  I'll just let that sink in for a moment.  Read it again.
"But why?"  It's really very simple.  As long as you apply the formula.
4 - There has to be a redemption.  Snape didn;t kill Dumbledore because he was evil.  He did it on Dumbledor's own orders - to protect Draco Malfoy.  When Dumbledore said "Severus - Please", he was begging Snape to kill him.  Otherwise Malfoy would have been forced to do it and that would have torn Malfoy's soul apart in the way that happens to all killers. The old man knew it was coming and arranged Draco's protection because... I said it before - Snape will also kill Voldemort.
5- Why?  Are you stupid?  Didn't you READ the book? Snape was absolutely head over heals in love with Harry's mum.  Why else would Harrys dad have been such a complete and utter shite to him all those years? Snape will protect Harry in just the same way that he has already protected Malfoy.
6 - It will come out.that the reason that Dumbledore trusts Snape so implicitly is not because of an unbreakable vow, or what ever they called it.  It is because Snape is bound by the most powerful magic on the planet - his undying love for Lily. (was that her name?) There will be tears shed at the end of the book, but they will all be for Severus. He will have sacrificed his own soul to protect Harry and atone for his failures that led to Lily's death in the first place.
7 - Writing credible plots.  What can I say?  It's a gift.

Oh.  Hang on.  While I'm busy being smug I may as well get it right.

Vader=Snape.  Voldemort = Emperor.

Ultimately it was Vader who killed the Emperor to save Luke.  I knew there was a reason why I brought Starwars into it.  That's what you get for being senile.

Peace.
