Who Gives Kudos:

Thursday, July 05, 2007
As a member of a struggling band in the UK it appears obvious to me that the so called 'music fans' dont really care about the grass roots of the music industry. "Indie Music", what ever that means, is now in many cases as manufactured as pop music, as magazines such as the NME appear to have complete control over what goes in peoples CD players.

It is annoying for lyricists, songwriters and musicians when we read on someones myspace 'music is my life', this statement is both a cliche and a lie for most who state it. These so called music fans pay no attention to the underground music scene and unless a band is promoted by zaine lowe or the NME refuse to give it the time of day.

I have found from personal experience that the best in "indie" music can be found in the clubs, bars and venues of your home towns, not in the glossy pages of music magazines.

For those of you who say 'music is your life', or 'you couldn't cope without it' spare a thought for those who slave away writing and playing and recieve no credit. For us music truly is our life and every time we get up on stage or write a lyric we are exposing ourselves to the maximum. Underground musicians and their followers are the real music fans in the UK, not those who follow the fashions set by the NME.

I urge you all to go out there and find bands for yourself, it is the most enjoyable way to listen to music. I promise you that by going out there to small gigs you will find truly great music and you will meet alot of genuine, friendly, interesting and intelligent people along the way.

Think of someone you know who you know is genuinely into music. Look at their myspace or facebook profile. I guarantee they won't use any of those cliches.

I agree with that - music had changed my life (for the better) and I have met some really great people along the way. There are just so many good bands in this country - probably too many for general weal - but hey - as long as there are people out there to appreciate what they do ...

But there is too much domination of the music scene by big companies whose only commitment is to increasing their already big profits.

Live music is the best music - it raw and real - and whethers its technically perfect or rough round the edges - its about real people loving what they do - and hey thats gotta be worth something.

Its worth a lot to me.

I agree 100% about magazines like the NME. I find that journalists etc who want to set trends should become musicians themselves rather than slagging off/ignoring bands who dont fit into their "agenda" and which results in the public not hearing about them. One thing Ive noticed time and again is how homogeneous popular music is, the rock music royalty seems to embody this, you get a few mavericks which is good (Radiohead stood out during Britpop). Also agree, a lot of indie bands just seem to make ear candy music. Just my two cents of course.

Mainstream music may well be "a fashion set up by the NME" but i don't believe that makes it bad music, its known to be "bad music", i believe, partly, because people don't want to associate themselves with the mainstream "rubbish" simply coz people want to be different and listen to stuff the majority of the nation hasnt heard about which is fine obviously, some of the stuff i listen to may well have not been heard bout by many ppl, although yea i believe there is a lot of bad indie mainstream ie. the strokes, kasier chiefs (my opinion) (and also other mainstream artists of different genres).. there is also some half stuff like the killers, some artic monkeys, don't count music as rubbish coz its manufactured, but simply coz may just be crap music in general! lol.
As for not recieving credit on your music or ability to play your intruments, don't worry about it, if you think about all the session musicians, how many of them recieve credit? not alot, they make a good living and love what they do. I personally don't want to, want to recieve credit for any music i create or perform because i know that what i can do/ create/ perform is a gift from God, therefore, if Gods given it me, why should i take the glory? Im pretty amazed and flattered (the wrong word but it gets the point across) that ive been chosen to do His work in such a fun and powerful way. Plus he'll stop my head exploding one day. take care guys
