A lot of people use it as a promotional tool. one thing I found that's nice in that regard is www.ping.fm. You can set it up to cross post to all your sites at once. So, for example, you want to let fans know of a new video, you can cross post the URL to twitter, and status updates for facebook and myspace, with only one post.
