domestic violence: state level findings

In 2004 in Oklahoma, over 24,500 domestic violence cases were reported to Oklahoma law enforcement agencies, reflecting a 32% increase since 1993. Experts indicate that only 50% of intimate partner violence incidents are reported. Oklahoma ranks 7th nationally in the number of females murdered by males, with 92% of the perpetrators being known by the victim.

As of January 2006, the Oklahoma Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board had reviewed 170 of the 359 domestic violence death cases that occurred from 1998 to 2002. They found that almost 40% of the victims had children with the perpetrator, and 46% had children with another partner.

You are only number 7 because of the population of the state.  Is this a per capita stat?

Great work here!

I don't want to make light of domestic violence.. it happens all to frequently.  But I KNOW that police are called on a whim and innocent people are arrested sometimes... and those times are included in statistics.  Both men and women use "the system" to get their significant other into trouble. It happened to me. I've seen it happen to others.  Is it even possible to get accurate stats?  I've only lived in OK for about 5 years, and the lifestyle is a bit different than that of the north where I grew up. I think that everyone deserves to be in a loving relationship.  And violence definately has no part in a relationship. Emotional abuse leaves no visible marks, when police are called and have to make on-the spot judgements about people, mistakes can and are made... and lives are ruined because of it.  Is there a solution?  I think some stiffer investigations and penalties for those reporting false abuse should be in play.  No one should be able to pick up the phone, lie to the police, and have someone arrested for no reason at all.  The saying around here used to be... "If the police are called, someone's going to jail."  That's not right.  That makes it all to easy for the jerks out there... BOTH male and felmale to cause trouble... and they do.
