Current mood:  impressed
Anyone who knows me, knows I love music, and anyone who really knows me, knows I also love films and art.

I was originally going to write about how awesome The Pick of Destiny was (it was, go see it, now), but then I saw the most incredible, most beautiful, most brilliant movie I've ever seen.

I've been waiting for a good 5 years, since seeing Requiem for a Dream and Pi for the first time, for Darren Aronofsky's next movie, so I've been following the progress and have been extremely excited that The Fountain is finally in theatres. I only hoped it would be as amazing as the trailers made it seem it would be. Well, it was far better, far beyond what the trailers showed.

The story is incredible, the acting is flawless (I had to wonder how he was able to direct his own fiance in scenes that passionate, I wouldn't be able to do it personally), the visuals are beyond description, the sound design was a huge leap forward from the already brilliant Requiem for a Dream, and the music (by Clint Mansell, Kronos Quartet, and Mogwai) was fucking beautiful. I had seen some of the other movies that Clint Mansell had done scores for, and was never as impressed as I was with Requiem for a Dream, but clearly, Darren Aronofsky brings out the best in him, because this movie finally goes beyond Requiem for a Dream into a new level of brilliance. Mogwai's contribution is subtle throughout, but very important, as it wouldn't be the same without it.

The clash of the three styles (classical, modern experimental rock, and electronic music) suits the plot perfectly.

It was honestly the most beautiful and emotional movie I've ever seen. Laura cried for the last 45 minutes or so of the movie, all of the credits, and most of the car ride home. I usually don't cry for movies, but I did a little for this one.

Some people in the theater didn't seem to get it, or wouldn't let themselves get it maybe. But for anyone who's ever felt anything deeply, ever, it will hit you like a sack of bricks wrapped around the cutest puppy you've ever seen.

If I can manage to afford it, I will see this movie in theatres again before it's too late. The only theatre in London that has it is the Wellington 8. I doubt Rainbow will get it since they switched over to first-run films and a $7.50 admission price.
