TROUBLE-SHOOTING GUIDE, 

POOL and SPA PUMPS and MOTORS

PUMP WILL NOT PRIME

 

  • No water in strainer housing and/or Pump housing is cracked or damaged
  • Pump strainer lid is not tight or is cracked / damaged
  • Lid o-ring needs lubracating or is Damaged 
  • Pool or spa water level is below skimmer
  • Pump basket or skimmer basket is clogged with debris
  • Clogged or broken impeller and/or volute a small stone or debris by-passes the pump basket it will break the impeller.
  • Closed valve in piping system
  • Pump is on low speed (two-speed units only)
  • Suction line has air leak. You can have a leak at any joint especially at the first fitting that is screwed into the strainer housing.
  • Suction line has an obstruction.You may have clogged suction piping, which is caused by items that get sucked through the skimmer into the piping, usually lodging at any turn in the piping.
  • Damaged mechanical pump seal
  • There may be a leak in the underground piping.

PUMP IS NOISEY

  • The bearings may be noisy. damage to the pump seal, which can leak and damage the motor bearings.
  • Cavitation due to improper suction line sizing, leaks in the piping, a blockage in the suction line, or a low level of pool water will cause higher than normal sound.

 

LOW FLOW - LOW FILTER PRESSURE

  • Pump basket or skimmer basket is clogged
  • Clogged or damaged pump impeller
  • Air leak in suction line
  • Restriction in suction line
  • Reverse rotation of motor (3-phase motors only)
  • Damaged mechanical pump seal

LOW FLOW - HIGH FILTER PRESSURE

  • Filter is dirty (Backwash or clean cartridge)
  • Restriction in return line - possible closed valves
  • Clogged or damaged pump impeller

PUMP DOES NOT COME ON

  • Power switch is OFF
  • Circuit breaker has tripped
  • Timer is set to OFF
  • Bad Capacitor
  • Motor terminal connections are faulty or incorrect
  • Motor shaft is locked by frozen bearing (Usualy a humming or buzzing is herd)

PUMP IS RUNNING TOO HOT AND CUTTING OFF

  • Faulty or incorrect electrical connections
  • Wiring to motor is undersized
  • Low or flucuating voltage, Your local power supply may be suffering a power drop.
  • Inadequate ventilation

Your pump has a thermal overload, which will shut the motor off when it gets too hot, and it will restart itself once it has cooled down.
