WUDUKPO LOCAL AUTHORITY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM PROJECT

PROPOSAL FOR AFRICAN EDUCATION INITIATIVE (A.E.I) FUND ASSISTANCE

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The basic schools (Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High School) at Wudukpo lack educational infrastructure most especially classrooms. The Junior High School in particular is in serious need of a classroom block to facilitate teaching and learning in the school.
A three unit classroom block with an office, store and a staff common room will help solve the problems of frequent withdrawal of student from the school by guardians, roof leakages during rain fall, teachers refusing posting to the school as well as threat to human life if the weak structure should collapse. The community is ever willing to release land free of charge for the construction and also provide communal labour to support the project. We are therefore appealing to education oriented philanthropic organizations such as AFRICAN EDUCATION INITIATIVE (AEI) to help construct the classroom block.

A SHORT HISTORY OF MAFI WUDUKPO BASIC SCHOOLS 27TH JULY, 2009.
Mafi-Wudukpo Local Authority (L/A) Primary School was established and officially opened on 1st September 1963. It was started with thirty-five (35) pupils of twenty (20) boys and fifteen (15) girls. It was under the headship of MR. J.C.Y. Apeti of Mafi -Tove. The first boys’ prefect was Ameworlor Robert of the blessed memory.
The land on which the school is situated was released by the late Torgbui Torgbo Dakpui II of Mafi- Lokokorfe near wudukpo. The founding members -Ameworlor Alorkpli , Wede Adzewoda, Asafo Xenyo, Amegah Ashiagbor, G.K. Ablor, Okah Zado , Akpabli Sablah, Akumani Aza, Akuyo Sablah , Dasi Klu, Kpordzorvi Manunya and Zowada Danyeametor who latter became the school management committee were carefully selected from the member communities.
In September 1988, the Junior High School (JHS) was also opened with thirty (30) students (twenty -seven boys and three girls) under the headship of Mr. Ben Amenuke. In 1989, a community initiated Kindergarten (K.G.) was added starting with sixty -three (63) pupils(forty boys and twenty three girls)with Ms. Agboga Mary as the attendant. In September 1990, Ghana Education Service took over the K.G up to date.
Currently, Mafi-Wudukpo Basic Schools are under the leadership of Mr. Michael Kofi Xenyo supported by eight teachers (four professionals, three non-professionals and two volunteers). Presently, student enrolment of the basic schools stands at two hundred and eighty-one [281]: J.H.S = sixty-nine [69] (fifty-two boys and seventeen girls); Primary school=one hundred and fifty [150] (eighty-nine boys and sixty-one girls; Kindergarten=sixty-two [62] (thirty-two boys and thirty girls). Presently, the P.T.A. Chairman is Mr. Akumani Mathew and S.M.C. Chairman is Mr. Okah David. There is every hope that with some improvement on the school environment, the school enrolment will definitely shoot up.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION.
Mafi-Wudukpo is a cluster community comprising Mafi-Lokokorfe, Mafi-Vogorme, Mafi-Waya and Mafi-Tsakpodzi; all in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region in the Republic of Ghana in West Africa. A mention of Wudukpo or Community therein refers to the cluster (member communities).
The indigenous people are subsistence farmers and that have low income levels making it difficult for them to raise enough money to construct the needed educational infrastructure to befit a modern school status. The school environment is in such a deplorable state to the extent that it does not attract pupils/students and even parents any longer. Pupils/students therefore drop out from school or transfer to better schools on their own accord or at the request of parents. The situation is adversely affecting the school enrollment, teacher distribution as well as teaching and learning in the school.
It must be mentioned here that the community has not sat down unconcerned waiting for manner to fall from heaven. In fact, it is their communal spirit and efforts of the PTA(Parent-Teacher Association) and SMC(School Management Committee) that have sustained the school to this far and will be willing to still contribute their widow’s might to building the school.
Though the community would not want to over-burden whoever is concerned with its numerous needs, it is just proper to mention education related problems to re- emphasize the need for the classroom block. Other necessities are library facility, computer laboratory, vocational/technical workshops and toilet facility. Under the circumstances, construction of a classroom block would be of utmost importance to the school.

PROJECT SUMMARY
Wudukpo L/A JHS was opened in September 1988 to save students from the hassle of travelling a distance of 11Km daily to access JHS education in the nearby community called Mafi-Avedo.
Though the school is absorbed into the public school system, not much has been provided by the government in terms of infrastructure. In exception of a three classroom block constructed by the District Assembly with support from European Union (EU) School Project, the other few structures in the school are provided by the community through communal labour, levies and sometimes student labour using typical tradition materials and methods. Because these materials do not last long, the community undertakes regular repair works on the buildings or a complete reconstruction in most cases.
The community is becoming virtually tired and helpless of this ritual of reconstruction of school structures. Any help in this direction will be a welcoming news and a great relief to the community and the nation as a whole.

STATEMENT OF NEED.
The present state of the classroom block of the school is a source of worry to the entire community. The people are counting their hope on philanthropic organizations such as African Education Initiative (AEI) to help construct a Three Unit Classroom Block with an office, store and a staff common room to save the situation.
Goals and Objectives
The community has identified the following specific goals and objectives in order of priority:
1. First Goal: To construct a classroom block
Objectives:
To attract more students to the school
To attract qualified teachers to teach in the school
To reduce the rate of student drop-out from the school
To ensure effective teaching and learning

2. Second Goal: To build a more enlightened and educated society
Objectives:
To turn out responsible citizens
To train the youth to be morally upright
To give the youth employable skills
To prepare the youth for further education and future demands
COMMITMENTS
The community is committed to education and development of the citizens and would therefore be ever willing to contribute their quota to any course geared towards the attainment of these goals. In building the school and any other facility that may come our way, we shall not relend in our efforts to provide communal labour to support the good course.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION
The Head teacher of WUDUKPO L/A BASIC SCHOOLS, Mr. Michael Kofi Xenyo, who is a native, will oversee the entire project of building the classroom block. A very competent resident building contractor by name CASTRO, also a native will be placed in charge of supervision and construction of the building. Success will be measured by following the allotted daily schedule of the work to ensure that work is completed on schedule.
