“I wanted to tell you that we would love to have you at the clinic,”
Marcus told Marie.
‘That’s great,”
“Could you start next Thursday?”
Marie agreed. The next Thursday she started the volunteer position.
While there, Dora McNeil came into the clinic. Marie knew Dora from school. The
two women didn’t like each other.
“I heard this clinic encourages children to have sex?” Dora said in a
snotty tone.
“We give people information.”
“You were a slut in high school and you’re a slut now.”
Marie wanted to slap the woman, but she knew that would only bring
trouble. After all, she was bipolar, It wouldn’t look good for her.
“As I remember you had Tim Junior before you knew any better. Don’t you
think girls today could benefit from a certain knowledge?”
“You little bitch. How dare you say that one of my children weren’t
planned?”
“I can add, Dora.”
“Wait until I tell whoever runs this clinic how abusive you are.”
“Hello Mrs. McNeil.” Marcus had entered from his office.
“Do you know how this crazy woman talked to me?” huffed Dora.
“If you continue to harass this volunteer, I’ll call Hospital Security.”
“Call Security on ME? You must be joking.”
Marcus went to the phone.
“I’ll leave. For now.” Dora left the clinic.
“I’m sorry about that, Marie.”
Marie wanted to cry, but didn’t.
“Marcus, people in this city know me. More than I told you. Maybe I
shouldn’t work here.”
“Marie, I want you to stay. The opinions of the Dora McNeils of this
world don’t interest me. Good people like you do.”
They both smiled.
“All right, Marcus. Do you get many protesters?” Marie asked.
“Some. But a good supporter like you are worth a million protesters.”
Marie felt like things would work out at the clinic. But she didn’t
count on Dora. What kind of trouble would Dora cause?
“But Marie, it’s just a volunteer job,” Rosemary pointed out.
“I know, Mother. But I want to do my best.”
Marie cared about Marcus. She wanted him to like her. He stood by her
during the conflict with Dora. He really believed in her. If only her old boss
had been so kind.
Was Marcus interested in her?
He was an attractive man. But she wanted to remain professional and
getting a crush on Marcus didn’t seem smart. But still, he was handsome.
The next day Marie volunteered, she met another woman. Yvonne.
Marcus’ girlfriend.
“Hello, Yvonne. I’m Marie.”
“The volunteer. Hello.”
Marie wondered if Yvonne knew that Marie was interested in Marcus.
Why would Marcus want Marie when he had Yvonne?
Why?
