Zero of our time EP Mikey Randall is a cool band from Toulon that play wise powerpop-punk in the vein of French acts like Second Rate, Seven Hate, Black Zombie Procession... The six songs on this EP are sweet and nicely written. The vocals are quite melodics and sound good for a French band. There are some great ideas here and there that make the songs interesting. I believe this EP was the first material they released. The bar is already quite high but I know they can do even better, so I'm looking forward for their next stuff.
Split EP with Chasing Paperboy These two bands have been friends for a long time and it's sort of natural thing for them to record a split together. Chasing Paperboy delivers the best stuff they have ever written, still in that same early-Samiam/Hot Water Music/Get Up Kids vibe, but with their very own way of writing songs. Each track is very special and stands out. The first song starts as if they were plugging their instrument on stage & started to play, and then the melodies kicks you right in the face! The vocals are almost yelled out, which gives a raw punk edge to it, as if the singer of Saves The Day was screaming on the top of his lungs but still with this out-of-key style. I love the way this first song ends, with each instrument fading away one by one, leaving the guitar alone. "Should I Go Far" is one of my favourite; I remember being impressed the first time they played it live. It's so powerful and energetic, something in that song actually makes me think of the band Garrison. It starts slowly and speeds up into an explosive guitar riff. Jean is fucking screaming on the chorus, in a really emotional way; damn, it sounds so genuine! The bridge is an amazing instrumental part with outstanding drumming, they even added some keyboards. "Wake Up" is the song that surprised me the most; it sounds like a fucking Anti-Flag song with a weird A Whilelm Scream-type solo at the end. The last song is a total hit; the chorus is the best thing they ever wrote! Again the vocals are quite intense and I'm downright amazed at the progress of the singer, his accent and his lines are so much better than on their "always trouble..." EP. Mikey Randall improved a lot too! The songs are more catchy and melodic. It sounds more alive and powerful than on their first EP. Some lines make me think of The Pookies and I believe they stole some ideas to The Draft and Hot Water Music too. The only time you'll hear the word "sober" about these bands is when someone is mentioning the artworks of their records. Too bad that the music is so exciting and the artworks are so simples and empty.
