While browsing through the many Warren Zevon videos on YouTube, I found this great clip of what is said to be Warren's first appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman."  No Year is given, my guess is the early 80's.
Enjoy :)

If my memory is still working I believe it was 1982 in the first year of Letterman's Late Night run. Letterman had a hard time getting guest because of the hour, still being a new show and Dave's sometimes mean spirited 'in your face' interview methods. WZ appearance made the show look more appealing to other artist that followed.

God, I remember this like it was yesterday. It was in 1982, "The Envoy" had just come out and the song he played before sitting down to talk with Dave was "Excitable Boy". After the interview he did "The Hula Hula Boys". Classic.

The full clip including "Excitable Boy", the interview and "The Overdraft" was included on the infamous Howard Roseman DVD set. The date of this appearance was 09/27/82 and is on disc 3, track 16.

i am enjoying (for the most part) the book of warren's life by his wife. amazing. what is it about us artistic types that we try so hard to kill ourselves so slowly? thanks for the memory. this show introduced me to wz and i've been a major fan ever since. miss him every day.
