Somethimes I feel addled with a million different advertisements and subliminal messages going on at once, all crying for someone's attention.
"Wear this; it'll look nice (and make boys notice you sexually)."
"Eat this; it tastes just like the real thing (and you can still keep your already unhealthily tiny waistline)."
"Try this; it makes you feel good (and makes you act on impulses that can break you)."
"Do what you want; it'll all be okay in the end (even if it's not okay for the people you hurt in the process)."
"Put yourself first (because Lord knows we aren't selfish enough as it is)."
"Buy this product; it will make you look younger (and more fake than you already happen to be)."
"Watch this show/movie/etc; it is entertaining (and filled with garbage on how to live and interact with other people)."
This is what I say in response:
Put beneficence into action!
Find out how you can volunteer in your community. Learn to play sports, or an instrument, create art, write, dance, exercise, build healthy relationships with people based on truth instead of sexual desire or the ability to take advantage of them and their connections. Read. Study. Reach out to people who are hurting. Listen. Slow down. Enjoy nature. Pray. Get involved with your school. Take the time to really, truly live; breathe in and out and appreciate it. Smile. Look on the bright side of things. Give your time and abilities to people. Look at the beauty of people who look different than you. Think about the idea of complete happiness constantly and strive to help others achieve it; this is the best way to attain it yourself.
Love without boundaries.
Anyone else have any pointers?
